    Well, that's it. I'm off the phone grid

    No more phones for me, I took the plunge, pulled the trigger, made the leap.... whatever.

    Picked up a $19 disposable celly off the grocery store rack, with a few preloaded minutes that should last me for emergency purposes probably for a few years. That takes care of my phone needs. Good luck with your iToys. AT&T loves their iMoney.

                  That sounds like something I should do at least eventually.

                  I only use the cell for emergencies mostly which means I pay about $19.95 / 3 months to keep the service alive. I have plenty of mins built up.

                  How long do these disposable cell phones have before expiring? And how many mins did you get for $19.95?

                  Technology just keeps marching forward and generally making things cheaper which is good.

                              For $19.95 I got a Samsung T301G (TracFone) handset, 20 minutes preloaded, Double Minutes For Life, and 60 minutes airtime (doubled to 120 +the 20 from the phone) = 140 minutes and 4 months of airtime.

                              I can literally toss it in the trash when it runs out, and buy another $19 buck package. Far, far cheaper than AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint, or any of those others' prepaid plans or regular plans.

                                              Thx. Wow Tracfone which is what I use. As I say I get 30* minutes and 3 months for $19.95. I got 1400 mins built up but I still need to give them $6.67 minimum a month. That is about Tracfone's cheapest deal online with a phone they gave me.

                                              So yeah even cheaper off the store shelf. You're getting 1 month more and 140 mins. Which would be plenty for my use too.
                                              Plus you get rid of the callin number which to me is good. I pretty much hate calls. lol I'm old school.

                                              * Edit: I think they do give me like 30 mins as well at 19.95 / 3 months. Still if I didnt have the mins built up I would def go throw away. Better deal all in all.

                                                                                                      Guys wandering around with headsets all day is a bit much but hey to each his own.

                                                                                                      Answ machines are so nice. You call theirs. They call yours. You call theirs and you get together. Much more convenient.

                                                                                                      Who wants to talk? Unless you are female. Females have always talked and it is just fine for them to talk all day. Or teen boys in first love. They can talk. The rest of us dont need to be talking all the time.

No answering machine, and I won't use voicemail or texting. The only phone calls I ever take part in are those that I must make to accomplish something..... like a vet appt, or a tow truck or whatever.... but never just to shoot the bull. People I know can send me email with their rambling thoughts, then I can decide if they're worth reading.

AT&T prepaid is a buck a day, before calls, isn't it? Then like, $.40 per minute or something? And a google phone = $$ too.

                                                                                                                                          The idea was to secure a mobile phone source that is as cheap as possible (to facilitate the "disposable" part), without contract or a linking account (with private info in it). Mission has been accomplished.

I can't even imagine the amount of money we saved. Probably costs about $100 a year for the phone instead of every month. We have 2 of them now because we've been in situations where we are seperated and need 2 phones.. but I've loved my tracfone. I can text, take pics.. everything a "regular" phone does. Except I don't get a huge bill every month.

I got those down to $132. The phone is just another item on the list I've been checking off for two years. Today, instead of needing to generate $20k per month just to cover daily expenses around here, I can live today for several months on literally zero money if I have to.

                                                                                                                                                                                  Only other alternative is those mobile usb sticks that run off the cell phone towers, but from what I have heard, their performance is abysmal, plus they charge you overages for using too much bandwidth. That's the only good thing about my current plan... I am grandfathered in from one of the old plans where they didn't care how much bandwidth you used. Sometimes I just sit and let torrents run all day just to spite them.
                                                                                                                                                                                  My Dad lives in a dead spot for Internet, no high speed through cable or dsl. He uses the aircard by Sprint I think it is, it works great for him.

                                                                                                                                                                                                  With that said, we have a plan from Verizon - it's $120 a month for three phones and includes everything - unlimited calls, unlimited texts, and unlimited Internet. Can't really live without them. Use it to track where my kid is, handy in emergencies (twice in the past year or so when my wife was out on the road), and they act as a modem too. I have a new friend who has a farm thirty miles out of town in the middle of no place and I've driven out there and used my cell to hook up my laptop just so I can surf and relax.
