            I'd say 3. You don't know the correct weight to start. And if you measured 2 different wieghts on your first 2 tries you would still need the 3rd measurment to find the counterfit!

                        i think it would take more...you leave too many variables by adding for at a time...I think 2 per side you could do it in 5...

                                                        my bad thought it was a regular postal scale not a double sided scale.

                                                        The answer is 3 tries. Heres how you do it.

                                                        1st try: take 8 coins and put 4 on each side. If it balances out even you did it in one shot, the ninth coin is the counterfit. If not.

                                                        2nd try: Take the 4 coins on the heavier side and divide them up 2 on each side.

                                                        3rd try: take the 2 coins on the heavier side and put 1 on each side. The heavier one is counterfit.
