U.S. judge blocks 1998 online porn law

PHILADELPHIA - A federal judge on Thursday dealt another blow to government efforts to control Internet pornography, striking down a 1998 U.S. law that makes it a crime for commercial Web site operators to let children access "harmful" material.

In the ruling, the judge said parents can protect their children through software filters and other less restrictive means that do not limit the rights of others to free speech.

"Perhaps we do the minors of this country harm if First Amendment protections, which they will with age inherit fully, are chipped away in the name of their protection," wrote Senior U.S. District Judge Lowell Reed Jr., who presided over a four-week trial last fall.

knowing whats on the internet it's got to be both parties the parents and the website owners working to keep children from viewing adult content. with all the shit that happens on mainstream sites and videos that are out there i'd be more worried about that kind of shit. hell if i had a child who was old enough to be able to surf the web i'd be standing over his/her shoulder the entire time they were online. none of that computer in there room type shit, you put the computer in a central location such a living room or den so that when the child is on the computer you can monitor what they are doing.

either way one big step for us more responsibility needs to be placed on the parent to protect their children, you either don't let your child use the internet unsupervised or you pay for a filtering software to block sites that you don't want your children viewing.

Only signed into law by Clinton because there was not going to be a budget without it...
During last-minute budget negotiations, the Clinton Administration reportedly objected to provisions of the bill pushed by Rep. Michael Oxley, R-OH, citing a Justice Department analysis that it was probably unconstitutional and would likely draw resources away from more important law enforcement efforts. But negotiators apparently failed to strike the Oxley language from the $500 billion Omnibus Appropriations measure due to be voted on in both the House and Senate and signed by the President tomorrow.

Irregardless that the law won't hold us accountable, I still believe one should take voluntary measures of protection as an ethical business practice.

It's your choice, but if you choose to do so voluntarily, RTA will enable your site to be filtered & could ensure that this option remains voluntary if enough people utilize it.

Place this single line of code in your meta tags & that's it.
