Plenty of sequels fuck up whatever good the originals created, but it takes a unique franchise whose sequels keep making the franchise better. I humbly submit the Rambo series as one of the very few that pulls this off.

First Blood: We are introduced to the brooding, PTSD'ed ubermensch that is John Rambo. He lives up to the warnings offered by his commander to the poor townspeople at the local authorities' expense. He's not fucking around.

Rambo: First Blood Part Two: Now he's kicking ass for Uncle Sam. He's really not fucking around.

Rambo III: In the most expensive Hollywood production in history at the time, we learn that he's really, REALLY not fucking around.

Rambo: The audience erupts in cheers when, despite his misgivings, he pops up to save the squad in the first village battle. Did I mention that -- at 802 years old -- he's not fucking around?

Can't wait for the next one.
