I was watching tv last nite and saw that commercial with the fat chick from "all in the family" about sponsoring needy children in africa and though it would be nice if the members of gfy all chipped in and sponsored a child

its $288 bucks for the year...we get letters and updates and photos on how our sponsor child is doing throughout the year.

Anyone interested post your preference on boy or girl,donation amount and contact info in this thread once we have hit the $288 dollar mark we will tally the vote on boy or girl, sponsor the child and maybe start a new thread where we can post the letters ,photos and updates on the child.

I sponsor an orphan in Cambodia now. Cost a few hundred bucks a year for everything, healthcare, food, house, school.

Later this year I'm going to sponsor a few more, and more after that from other places. I put aside a budget of 4k a year to help needy children. I know that's not much, but I do what I can. It was something I always wanted to do and I have been truly blessed with good fortune, so now I want to share what I have, and help when I can.

what he said. i'm always suspicious of these causes that tell you just to send your money off to them in the name of christianity to help save a child. i'd like to see the child receiving the money myself and how expensive the watches are on the wrists of the directors of such programs.

I agree to an extent, but charities are just as competative as corps these days - they have to be to survive.

So you need a corporate structure at the top or you just wont survive as a charity these days. Its a shame, but you cant do much about it.

And since you are in Cali. if you know of anyone who has childrens clothes, we could use some for the local orphanages. We have a ton of them just south of the border, and I will deliver them myself.

If anyone has clothes for children, or money donations, we will purchase clothes ( used so the dollar goes further ) and food and school supplies for them.

I dont get me wrong, and I am sure that tASSy will agree. We understand that. but you have to understand something. Those charities are making a KILLING. The good will offices in SanDiego are beyond description. They have mahagony walls in the building. WTF for? That money should have been for the children. They also have cars to drive the execs around. WHY??? Cant they drive themselves???

Thats why I started with "I agree to extent"....

"If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys" - and monkeys cant run an organization the size of Oxfam or Christian Aid for example.

I hate the waste, but if they get the job done - ie raise money and feed the poor then thats the way it has to be.

Of course there is a way around it - trusts like the one Gates has set up.... maybe I wouldnt mind paying and extra few dollars for my Vista Upgrade.

instead of doing that, I am going to propose something serious:
let's sponsor someone from our group, to go to Africa and talk to the local orphanages, and charities, to see what is the best way to send help to children in the area.
I don't think that the money that is donated thru those TV people actually goes anywhere, other than their own pockets.

tassy im the ast person to be shelling out my cash to some bogus charity..
seeing the evangelist with the dollar signs in there eyes diamond rings and patels on there wrist is something ive always laughed at...as far as the religion aspect im the last person to be sending cash in the name of chistianity... on that note i would assume as far as this organization goes i would imagine if it were a scam we would have heard about it by now....as far as i know sally struthers defintly isnt missing any meals but she also isnt driving around in a bently on 24s either... for the minmum amount of money involved...do the possible ends justify the no so difficult means..i would say so...

Some of the money does get through. but that is only after they take out the administrative fees.

LOL im not trying to go to africa and talk to the locals..but since it was my idea from the start..i will vollunteer to go if thats the case... really for now im am trying to keep it simple and sponsor a kid...ofcoarse every red cent isnt goung to go directly to that kid but im sure it will provide for them in some sort of way....

its 10 bucks...you get what you pay for...i kind of want to see what they send back as far as pics and what the kid has to say....if all goes well we will have there name and "adress" and then somone can go visit with a ppokcet full of hershey bars and and a bag full of adult re-bil revenue

DEA: I did that once with a kid from Costa Rica, thru one of those TV help things, until a friend of mine who lives in the country showed me how the money is actually disbursed. I am all pro-helping kids, but I have to see that my help actually goes to them, and not to some fat prick that is sitting behind a desk enjoying life.

Czarina..this organization has been around ever since i started watching tv..and so far i havent heard seen or read about them beig shady in the least bit. Until somone shows me proof that they are shady i will continute to think positive and hope that not everyone out there is bad.
