I started out learning old Metallica and shit like that, and quickly learned that the slower you play the more emotion is in the music. Adam Jones from Tool is a prime example. The music doesn't even need vocals to convey the feeling.
heh, actually thats not what i thought to myself...

it was being advertised over the radio that the fastest guitar player in the world is playing at a local guitar shop, so of fucking course i'd go, if you didn't and u've played guitar for a long time you'd be stupid not to, cause it was also advertised as a clinic, learned a lot from it as well...

i also grew up listening / learning metallica... they're my fav. band. i think for the most part you're right about the slower songs are more emotional... but, i think if there were a song with a melodic background with a very fast solo'ist performing, with the right scales and such, it could accomplish the same effect.
