Buddhism also teaches moderation and the enlightened middle path between extremes. If you want total and complete enlightenment, then perhaps you will have to shun all desires. But getting rid of the petty wants and desires of modern life and only focusing on those things that are true to your heart, you can come a long way in finding happiness.
