I lived in the SF Bay Area 20 years ago, and Oakland was a total shithole then. Since 1989, there was a lot of damage caused by the Loma Prieta quake (pancaked freeways, anyone?), fires in the alleged rich part of town--the Oakland Hills--which destroyed hundreds of home, and crime wave after crime wave.
