    NIH scientists find antibodies that block most HIV

    SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Scientists at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases have found two antibodies that can stop more than 90% of the known virus strains that cause AIDS, the National Institutes of Health said Thursday. "The discovery of these exceptionally broadly neutralizing antibodies to HIV and the structural analysis that explains how they work are exciting advances that will accelerate our efforts to find a preventive HIV vaccine for global use," said NIAID director Anthony Fauci in a statement. The naturally occurring antibodies, called VRC01 and VRC02, neutralize more HIV strains than any other known antibodies, the NIH said.

                  It's looking like a vaccine for HIV will be developed before a cure for it or AIDS. If that happens there's going to be a lot of people already with it forgotten about and left for dead, not that I wouldn't applaud a vaccine.

                                              The scientists identified the two antibodies as VRC01 and VRC02. Laboratory studies showed the antibodies could neutralize a larger number of HIV strains with greater efficiency than previously-identified antibodies.

                                              Details from the study were published Thursday in the online edition of the research journal Science.
                                              Yet the July 9th edition of science only has a special AIDS feature - nothing on this research...

                                                      The only people who are truly immune to this virus are people who have mutations in the binding domain of their CD4+ T cells. That way the virus's gp120 can't bind and the virus can't initiate infiltration. They know this because they found that certain prostitutes in Africa who lived around some silver mines or something were known to have unprotected sex with known HIV positive male miners. Like more than 90+ guys. Yet the women were never infected...
