    Stump The Video Editor

Ok, so I still got time to kill.

Some of you may have some questions concerning video editing that you've always wanted answered.

    So g'head, ask me anything!

Except for stupid RTFM questions. If you're looking where to find an option in a program, don't bother asking. Look it up in the help files!

    Ask away!

I wish I had extra time to kill. I love these technical threads though, and I spend more time with post production than actually filming porn. I have a dvd-r master burning on one computer with Adobe Encore for one project and on the other f*cking Cleanner XL can't handle the non-square pixels in the Cineform AVI file I threw at it to encode into Real format for one customer. Gotta do it all over again, aagh...

Why dont u try Sorenson Squeeze? I've never tried encoding Cineon with it, but it usually does a good job.

If all else fails, try After Effects

That's a fair suggestion, but I have been using Cleaner XL for years now and the batch capability is very handy when one has to do three formats in multiple frame sizes. I am gonna try changing the settings in Cleaner XL and do a test with a short clip to see if I can make it work for Real and Quicktime as well as WMV. I spent $500 for the program and another $125 on the upgrade to version 1.5 recently, so I don't feel giving up at the first glitch.

I'd say Cleaner. I havent used Vegas very much, but if you're batch rendering, go with Cleaner.

i'd say the problem with cleaner is that I get a video ready for rendering(editing ect), and I can do it there. If I were to go to cleaner, I would have to render my video to what format? so I could then re-render again to wmv/mpeg? does that sound right?

I'm assuming your not using a VCR.

The lines are from something called Interlacing.

The way standard video works is at every Frame (29.97 frames per second in North America), there are 2 Fields making up that frame.

There is an upper and a lower field. Why are there fields? well thats a longer question I don't think I need to answer right now cause I'd lose alot of people.

But basically, a field is an image half complete. When both fields are put together, it makes up a frame.

When you pause video, your usually pausing on a field, therefore half an image, therefore you get those little lines breaking up your image.

If you want a full frame when you pause, you need to find footage that is "Progressive" (not using fields). That type of footage is composed of single entire frames.

If you want your video to be in progressive format, you'd need to convert it. Try googling "progressive video converter". I can't think of a program right now and I gotta get running. Beers and babes are waiting for me

Ya you need one big chunk.

Render it out as an AVI using the Microsoft Codec (Microsoft DV codec... or just DV). 35 minutes of video will cost you about 8gb of hd space, but its going to give you a near lossless quality video file that you can import into cleaner.

If your editing in NTSC, you should be exporting in either 640x480 or 720x480 (depending on your source footage)

If you're in PAL, its something like 720x520.

I don't use Vegas so I'm not aware of any batch rendering options.

When rendering or encoding from an editing timeline like from Premiere Pro or Vegas to a finished format like wmv, one can generally only make one output at a time, that's it. The advantage of outputting a standard def movie from the editing timeline first to a DV AVI file and then in Cleaner XL or Procoder to the finished formats is that you can set it to encode to multiple formats and frame sizes overnight while you sleep, not just one. Plus one can add a watermark at the correct sizes at that stage. There also may be minor differences in the quality depending on the settings that you choose.

Hope you don't mind me adding to your thread, Nowhere.

There is a simple shot in the original Star Wars movie that because they were short on time needed to be extended. The did a very basic edit and extended the scene by a second or so.

Can you name the scene and tell me the name of the simple technique they used?

                                        Spend you some brain.
