Google about to take on Facebook?

Is Google prepping to launch some kind of Facebook-killing service? That's the rumor of the day, spawned by a brief Twitter update by Digg founder Kevin Rose.

According to Rose, the new service is going to be called "Google Me," and it will?in some way?offer up a social profiling functionality that could rival Facebook's.

google social services are just too creepy to catch on.

and since the people that work there are happily part of the borg they can't comprehend the privacy concerns of average people.

Interesting tidbit about Orkut. Google gives their employees 20% of the workweek to develop independent projects. Orkut came from that system.

If Google merges live webcam chat and/or free dating services and/or a free craigslist-style marketplace feature... then anything is possible.

I like FB, but I'm not a huge fan of the arrogant founder - who BTW, also couldn't care less about privacy issues... until those issues hit the news and threatened his bottom line.

I would be really suprised if they did take people away from Facebook

The users are so comfortable using it and they dont like change. Facebook is one big family that will be very hard to split unless Facebook keep doing stupid things and piss off their users then maybe google will have some kind of a chance. Users just see google as a search engine and a free email ady and its gonna take a lot to change that too

Its other way around, Facebook is aggressively picking up some of Googles key players.
so if I am google I will do everything in my power to make sure Facebook doesnt get into "social search", which is sure to be the next killer business model.

They tried going in that direction with Buzz. Little traction. Hopefully, this initiative yields better results for them.

If you organize your contacts in gmail, buzz is a great tool to let those groups of people know about your updates, corp stuff, etc - without having to mass email. Like google doing your mailing for your with zero chance of it hitting a spam filter. Might appear dead to some, but for sure not to everyone.

I welcome anything that will kill Facebook or at least try to kill it. A retard website and the sheep who conform and use the site because their friends are on it.

If you really want to stand out, get your own website, and have your friends visit it. None of this "are you on facebook" shit? I get girls who I meet at clubs and literally at some point during the night, i hear that same line from them
