The reason I would invest on it is because its receiving quite a good chunk of "free porn" traffic from yahoo.

These ones are pretty productive ( ;) ) and we designed them ... mainly header designs and simple well spaced thumbs... makes a difference....

Plus... to be fair... isn't it your job to make your site more productive? Using your own choices about design and thumb links etc ?
Oh yeah, and the argument for advertising by a designer, is usually sitting in his/her portfolio. The work argues for itself.
