If someone can rationalize something like 9-11, then surely anything the US has done can also be rationalized and justified.
Can't have it both ways.
If one advocates lawlessness, or attacking someone just because they are succesful, they may not like the results when that same lawlessness bites them in the arse too.

What needed " protection " ....
The main reasons for the Iraq invasion ( oups, liberation ):
- Oil reserves
- Saddam was to change from US$ to Euros for his oil dealings, weakening the US currency
- Pressure in the UN to drop all sanctions against Iraq, allowing Foreigners to step in and do business ( not Americans, just like Cuba ).
- Saudi Arabia incertainity about the US bases that were to be " temporary : need of new real estate.
Nothing was to protect, or liberate, or democracy ... that is all the wrapping paper ...

Iraq is simply a tougher battle than we thought.
But that doesn't mean it is any less important or any less justified.
Why people --especially the American left, and now the foreign pornographers --expect instant progress there is beyond me.
It is also baffling why people can't see that Saddam's criminal actions, his mass murders, his invasion of a foreign country, his attempted assasination of a US President, his accumulation and use of WMDs including against civilians, and his defiance of the UN... left us no alternative.
Still:
1. Saddam is gone
2. Iraq has had its first free elections
3. Iraq now has a constitution
Those are major accomplishments.

There doesn't need to be a war for China to become the next superpower. It?s really all about money. Where do you think most things are made these days? What is the US going to do when the Chinese are exporting $1000 cars? I doubt GM or Ford can compete with that...and that's just one example. Most industries rely on China to either make parts or produce goods for the end consumer. Moreover, where do you think the US is going to be when you $ isn't worth a damn because Bush has built up an insurmountable debt fighting wars abroad? Who is even paying for the war? What do you think will happen when foreign investors and governments pull their money out of the US economy? Unfortunately you can't see that tides change for many reasons, not just war. Nobody that has said that China is going to be the next superpower has said it because they think there will be a war, but rather because China is going to be very very rich soon. Money buys allies. Oil is the past not the future. I understand you are patriotic and love your country, I can't blame you for that; everyone should love where they are from...in fact I respect that you take the time to support your views (when it is clearly not the popular one). But, would you not rather your president think of the distant future, not just 2 years down the road? Isn't it an interesting choice of country to invade considering there are many others around the globe that have the same problem? Why doesn't the US care about these countries? Where are these WMD's you speak of? Defiance of the UN...why would the US really care? They make unilateral decisions all the time against the UN's wishes including invading Iraq. Further, the American reluctance to pay it's debt to the UN (as of Oct 2006 the US owes $526 Million) shows that as a country the US could care less what the UN thinks or says. So then, as I'm sure you will agree; there were other reason for invading Iraq.

The USA is a superpower because it has the tax base to afford to be one. That is the only reason. The UK has a population of around 60 million. If it had the land to support a population of 300 million it would also be a superpower of approximately the same strength as the USA. Why? Because it would have the tax base to be able to afford/manufacture all the military hardware you do and would have an army five times the size of its current armed forces.
Note I said first world country, I have no idea why you mentioned China and India. It's probably because you obviously didn't understand the point I was making, which is what I expected. Those paying taxes in China and India are paying nowhere near the amount of taxes those in first world countries are paying because their wages are so much lower.
Face it, there is nothing special about America. The reason you are a superpower is solely because of your population and the tax base it generates. If Canada had 10 times the population they would be a superpower.... If Australia had 15 times the population they would be a superpower.... 2. Oil was also one of the stated reasons for the war, and Bush said that early on.
