ICANN Publishes Revision to Proposed ICM (.XXX) Registry Agreement for Public Comment

    16 February 2007

Consistent with the direction given by the ICANN Board as described in the Preliminary Report of the 12 February 2007 Special Meeting of the Board, ICANN today posted for public comment a revised Appendix S [PDF, 108K] of the proposed registry agreement with ICM (sponsoring organisation for the proposed .XXX registry).

The remainder of the proposed agreement (posted in the 5 January 2007 announcement below) is unchanged.

Public comments can be made at [email protected] and viewed at http://forum.icann.org/lists/xxx-icm-agreement/. Public comments received on or before 9 February 2007 will be considered at the next scheduled Special Meeting of the ICANN Board (see http://www.icann.org/minutes/).

IMO, ICANN needs to somehow be alerted that claims of "sponsored community" support are bogus, and that many folks/entities who initially supported .xxx no longer do. ICANN should make ICM "PROVE" current support (and, one of the group of 24, or whatever that number is, cannot say that all their affiliates automatically can be counted as individual supporters!).

KarupsPC can be changed to XXXRewards/Karups and were still against it.

I was at the meeting and the the story he told about trying to fight this from becoming mandatory were such lies. He had noway to explain why he would fight something that would only make him more money.

One question still remains clear after reading the minutes from the last meeting; who the hell are the "24 major suppliers of adult online content" that ICM is claiming as a sponsoring community in favor of .XXX ?

AND, besides identifying them, we need to make certain that their affiliates/webmasters were NOT "counted" be either ICM or the "24" as automatically included in the 1,500 webmasters that I think I remember Lawley mentioned as supporting .xxx? Somehow that needs to be flushed out, as I would think that a lot of those affiliates/webmasters might be upset being counted as supporters if they weren't actual supporters---they might even want to disassociate with whomsoever included them without their OK?

The above folks might also want to immediately notify ICANN (and ICM) to list them as being against .xxx, not in favor of .xxx.

There are some potential backlash things that can ensue if someone can make this happen.

                                        Any ideas?

How can we make this all happen?

Well, its good that certain board members are questioning whether the original "24" are actually an accurate reflection of the "adult community"... and they do realize that this has the potential to give ICM control over all legitimate online pornography.

Definately bad that other board members (Susan Crawford, Joichi Ito, and Dave Wodelet) say that they don't care if there is no major support for the TLD and this is an undue burden to place on ICM. Even though the basis of their application is that this is something we all want and only for our benefit.

But I see no procedural reason why ICM or even ICANN can't name the names of those who are in support of ICM's application.

For example, we all know .MOBI is supported by Google, Microsoft, Nokia, Samsung, Ericsson, T-Mobile, etc.

AND, besides identifying them, we need to make certain that their affiliates/webmasters were NOT "counted" by either ICM or the "24" as automatically included in the 1,500 webmasters that I think I remember Lawley mentioned as supporting .xxx? Somehow that needs to be flushed out, as I would think that a lot of those affiliates/webmasters might be upset being counted as supporters if they weren't actual supporters---they might even want to disassociate with whomsoever included them without their OK?

The above folks might also want to immediately notify ICANN (and ICM) to list them as being against .xxx, not in favor of .xxx.

There are some potential backlash things that can ensue if someone can make this happen.

                                            Any ideas?

How can we make this all happen?

Its almost a good thing all this came to public attention, it brought out the worst in all of you involved. Now we know who can really be trusted in this industry, scumbags.

FightThisPatent, I wanted to ICQ you but figured i can post it here instead

so did you perhaps email Vint recently (or anyone else from ICANN board) with some transcript from the xbiz .xxx seminar?

In the ICANN minutes it's written that they don't have any such document yet but they're looking for it..
                                                        I don't use ICQ anymore.

My thought is that these 24 'claim' to speak for their affiliates.
Now figure that even if they have 5-10k affiliates each, ICANN can think that they are speaking for 120-240k people/domains - WHEN IN REALITY they can only speak for their own domains.

                                                                      Their calculations are flawed because:
                                                                      1) Affiliates have accounts almost everywhere so they can be counted 1,2,up to 24 times - which is inflating their numbers or 'validity'
                                                                      2) They have no power/right to 'speak' for their affiliates/webmasters

We have to let ourselves be heard. That means - we either DEMAND that the 24 are outted so we can *check off* our names from the 24's claim
Or we let them know that nobody speaks for 'our' domains - give a count of how many you have and how many you speak for when you say NO to .XXX

personally, i have sent a very long letter to Vint Cerf - somewhere at the end of the last public comment period - but since I do not represent any big company, or actually I don't name any company name when writing my letters, I don't think I am entitled to ask him for such list

I am always just writing arguments and signing with some name, but not mentioning any websites or copany name that I run, in that case, I don't feel like I am entitled to ask for the names of companies who were supporting .xxx, if I don't specify who I am

but since other people like Brandon (or someone else), don't have such problems, they could ask the ICANN chairman why the list of companies who aallegedly support .xxx is not public
                                                                        I don't use ICQ anymore.

"Getting a .xxx domain name would be voluntary, but companies are already lining up to use the moniker. According to ICM Registry, the Jupiter, Fla., company leading the .xxx effort, more than 500,000 website names ending in .xxx have been preregistered.

"It would give a space for responsible members of the adult- entertainment community," said Stuart Lawley [pictured], chief executive of ICM Registry. "The whole point of this was to encourage a migration to .xxx."

I wonder how many pre-registrations include .com-related sites/domains belonging to the group of 24, or the writers of the 1,500 letters that Lawley claims, or affiliates of the group of 24???

I cannot overemphasize HOW important it is for everyone to individually take 5 minutes and send a short email to [email protected].

Make it clear as well that of the 500,000 "preregistrations", probably 90% of those are from webmasters proactively protecting their domain names in the event the proposal is passed. That's a far cry from actively supporting the proposal.

The proposal is fatally flawed. It will not protect kids or reduce adult content on the web, it isn't wanted by the industry it would serve, and it serves ONLY to enrich ICM.

Please, please add your name to this list AND send an email to ICANN. Your livelihood could be at stake.

I am a webmaster of an adult site and oppose .XXX

It will not serve any benefit to the Adult industry in fact quite the contrary. .XXX is a ploy to gain revenue from registrations which adult site owners will feel they have to register to protect their names.

If we want to protect children, it is far more simple to create a safe GTLD for kids such as .kids and then put kid safe sites in there rather than try and park the adult industry in a small corner of the web with .XXX , allowing the kids to see all thee other content out there that is inappropriate.

What we must realise is there is so much other content (such as rotten.com) that is inappropriate for kids and doesn't class as an "adult" site so wouldn't be quarantined by something like .XXX. I have young kids and want to see .kids in action then we can set our browsers on our kids machine to only see .kids sites and nothing more.
