Our understanding of the universe is so crude that I'm sure we'll get to a point of understanding thousands of years in the future to go someway to explain the cosmic nature of our essence. In my opinion the fact that all things are made out of atoms (including all creatures humans etc) and everything is therefore connected at particle level speaks to the what we are, and furthering our research into this will give us more answers. The older I get the more I feel that the randomness of life and the endless possibilities for change prove that right versus wrong moral decision-making is fundamental to our growth as a species. As a race we are driving more into bad choices, greed, corruption and so on, that its clear the smarter we get the further backwards we go. Maybe that's the message we're supposed to understand that simplicity is also purity, basic atoms represent our very core, and basic fundamental compassionate behavior to every neighbor should be our core focus.
For atoms i actually looked into wave theory as part of the structure of atoms and looked at how physicists explain the connection between the original four quarks and how light and energy are the base structure of matter. So therefore matter and energy are not two states there is only energy. Then if that is true what holds the energy in the shape that it ends up in? Going to your thought my belief is that will of the energy determines the state or end structure of the quarks making up the atoms making up us.

So a tree wants to be a tree therefore it is a tree.

At the base of this goes to my belief that humanity is as it should be, we are no less or more than we chose to be and if you chose to be more than you are, you will become that.
