I've sat through a ton of band practices like that, where one of the guitarists has some weird off-beat idea that doesn't flow with what you usually play. Then your natural instincts after playing together for a few years kicks in and you do what you'd normally do or what you anticipate the other guy will do and it's wrong every time but it's a bitch to break that habit.
My old band had one song that went literally spent 3-4 days in 9 hour practices trying to nail down a simple pause and resume during a song. We put it in a weird place that didn't make sense but the end result sounded great.
So I can totally understand that clip.
