I have always wondered

If blogging and message board aren't protected by any Journalism Law in the States, how can bloggers protect themselves when they need to report wrong doing and have the proof to show it without being persecuted by the full extent of the law (for libel)?

That is of course, if it has proven that the intentions of the blogger is indeed to expose real and verifiable wrongdoing, and not just to malign the person or company he is whistle-blowing against?
