CNN...just gave a statement
"Several blocks around New York's Times Square were closed to pedestrian and vehicular traffic Saturday night after a police officer saw smoke emanating from a box inside a parked car, according to authorities.
New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne told CNN that the shutdown began after a foot patrol officer passed by a Nissan Pathfinder with Connecticut plates on 45th Street between and 7th and 8th Avenues. Browne said the officer noticed a box inside the car with smoke coming out.
Browne said officials at the scene were using a robot to search inside the car. The police department's public information office said the box and other items found in the search are not confirmed at this time to be a bomb.
The Marriott Marquee Hotel wasn't allowing anyone to enter or leave the hotel Saturday night, and at least one nearby restaurant, TGI Friday's, had closed to customers and was evacuating staff.
Lets hope its a false alarm......other news outlets are as you mentioned talking about propane tanks and stuff.......doesnt look good !

I went through there in a taxi at around 10 and they were just sectioning off a small section of w.47th St. Then when I got home, switched on the news (NBC) they said they were 'expanding the parameter" (never good). It looked like a crazy scene and I had just been there. Craziness.

after I heard the news that the car had propane in it.. i remembered that yesterday Myth Busters had a show about propane tanks and they were checking if those things could fly like rockets, they did various tests blowing them up.. if a propane tank cought on fire, built in pressure safety mesures would prevent it from blowing up, just a stream of fire.. if pressure safety thing is disabled (they explained it a bit how to do it) - these convenient propane tanks blow up big time in the fire.Last edited by Serge Litehead; 05-02-2010, 12:35 AM.Comment

Propane gas tanks were used a few years ago by a couple of terrorists trying to blow up Glasgow airport. This pair of bright sparks drove a Cherokee right into the terminal building and attempted to set the tanks and themselves alight. Considering one was a doctor and the other an engineer, (I think) they didn't have much of a criminal masterplan - and got punched out very rapidly by the locals - Glasgow being being pretty notorious as a tough violent place.
One died of his burns the other is now doing 30 years. They've probably moved the Cherokee by now and maybe even tidied up a bit at the airport, but I'm pretty certain scots civilisation hasn't taken a great hit.
