I don't know why are you that worried with Thesis. The designer you're looking for shouldn't be a master at Thesis, but a master at WordPress. Thesis is just a well done wireframe, but I assume you will want to push the boundaries, so you need a designer who knows his/her php and his/her JQuery and his/her WP, not his/her "Thesis". If the designer/coder knows PHP, WP and JQuery, then he/she won't need to ever have seen Thesis, you're scaring people away with the "did you used Thesis?" song as if any designer/coder ever used the all the hundreds of thousands of WP themes around.
The above being said, if you plan to have more or less the Thesis theme "as is", you'll need just a good designer able to skin the theme. If you need to go further, then you'll need a designer AND a coder, I can count with one hand the amount of people on GFY able to do both
And no, I'm not offering my services, just commenting on the issue and wishing you good luck, I feel like you will need it

Designing on Thesis is different than other Themes and WP itself.

(and no, it isn't different, hooks are hooks, and even the dumbest coder in the world is able to replace WP hooks with Thesis hooks. He has fallen for the mounds of marketing hype on the thesis site obviously.
I've got a developers license for thesis and it's great. I use it on 6 or 7 sites. It's nice to be able to toss a few lines of code into the custom functions file and then make some changes to the custom.css file and it's done.
If you're going to create a completely custom theme anyway though then thesis is an unnecessary hurdle.I like pie.Comment

I agree there, its more for people who dont knmow how to mess with theme code. also own headway, wpunlimited, thesis, and reptile framework all are good, and do basically the same thing.
