He was also racing against VERY good horses. Sham who came in second at the derby broke the track record himself while losing by a couple lengths.
At the Belmont Sham ran so hard he crapped out in the back stretch and never raced again.

I was going to say Sham was a quick horse too. 2nd in the Preakness and perhaps Secretariat broke him psychologicly. But, I dont know about that
Also Shecky Green was off to a good start in the KD (wasnt that the famous comedian's name?) I bet Sinatra, Lewis, Sammy Davis jr, Shecky, Martin, Bishop were in the stands. As wasnt Shecky kind of an old nighclub comic who hung with the Rat Pack. 1973 was prime for the Rat Pack.
