The ONLY reason is the most popular sport in the world is because you can be piss poor and still play it. You only need a ball and your feet. American football requires at least 3-4 people and actual talent like throwing an accurate pass and a receiver getting open, someone pressuring the passer etc...Baseball? forget it. No way poor people can afford bats, balls, bases and most dont have the hand/eye coordination needed...Basketball is popular in other countries because again, you can be poor and still play it. you just need a ball and something to throw it into. Not much skill required. Soccer is by far the easiest and least expensive sport to play.Comment

Pretty much spot-on. When most every other sport requires some outlay of cash for special equipment and you have one that only requires a ball, well, the one that requires a ball is going to be played by more people worldwide, period. Soccer, football, call it what you want, it's a very basic game that happens to be very affordable to get started playing.
