Heh the laws down here are definitely on the self protection side.
Even attempting to break into someones car (while they are in it) is seen as breaking into someones home, as cars are extension of home down here, so deadly response is protected by self defence of the Castle Doctrine.

However back to not being in your car or home, if you are carrying and your life is threatened and they do not retreat after you pull weapon and keep coming to you. Game over.
