    Tim James says 'English ONLY'

    Wow, I just stepped into a time machine and went back to the 1950s or something. The gubernatorial candidate for Bama (that's Alabama to yankies ya'll) has an ad out saying that is he is elected Governor of the great state of 'Bama then by god you better speak English. Read more about this class act and watch his ad here;

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ynews/201004...s/ynews_ts1831

thats really unbelievable. While I agree that a citizen of the US should be able to speak, read and write English I also believe that offering Government forms, tests etc should be available in their native language if possible just to guarantee that they understand whats being asked or what information they are supposed to be getting

English is the de facto national language of the United States, with 82% of the population claiming it as a mother tongue, and some 96% claiming to speak it "well" or "very well". However, no official language exists at the Federal level.
However, English is the official language in many states including Alabama.

I see no problem with that. If you want that government handout the LEAST you can do is learn to read English to some degree.

"During the mid-1990s, Escalante became a strong supporter of "English-only" education efforts. In 1997, he joined the "English for Children" initiative, which was a campaign against bilingual education in California schools."

Even if they wanted to change the forms to English only they could do it through the legislature. I wonder if running on it as a campaign platform is basically going for the lowest common denominator ya know?

Common sense dictates if you cannot read road signs you shouldnt be on the road, DL denied.

Id rather have old people on the road, and guess what, we take their license too when they cant read the signs anymore.

And how is it racist to require English? I have tons of friends that moved here from all over the world, Russia, China, etc.... and they learned English once they got here. If THEY can do it, then anyone can.

Personally I think that it is totally insulting that people live here for years and don't respect our culture enough to learn our language. When I travel, anywhere, I take the time to learn some of the language, even if I'm only going to be there for a few days. If I moved to a country that spoke a language other than English, I would learn the their language. I wouldn't expect them to cater to me.

Imagine opening a restaurant in Columbia and having waiters that don't speak Spanish, people would be outraged and would spit on you.... and I can't blame them.

                    It works both ways though....

I don't know really. I believe that driver licenses should only be given to citizens and that all citizens should be required to learn English. BUT.... I also know that in this country a vehicle is damned near required in most of the country and that if I just learned or was in the process of learning a brand new language I would really appreciate anything written in English especially if it was important

English is the national language. We shouldn't be offering up forms in other languages. This only encourages immigrants not to learn English. My step father came to the this country, only spoke French. They didn't have any fucking French forms for him.

On top of this, it's to the point now were I cannot order fast food without speaking Spanish. I don't eat fast food often - in fact, I cannot the remember the last time I did eat fast food - but it's to the point now where the local McDonalds, Burger King, and even Panda Express all have employees who speak Spanish - and very little English.

If this trend continues, English will no longer be spoken.

It's obviously a good idea to learn a MAIN language in the country where you reside, and normally immigrants do so. Its a matter of getting to the CONVERSATIONAL level that is more difficult, but understanding road signs etc...come the fuck on.

For the record, and for the uneducated, contractions are part of the English language. If they weren't we wouldn't be taught them. Contractions are in most/many languages.

I have started to avoid contractions because our scripts at Royal Cash does not like them so I get a symbol in place of a '.......its a habit now for me

yeah, lingualism is working out great for our school system. ya know, if more $ was spent on the education system we would have a great functioning multi-lingual nation. even when i went to high school multi languages were taught, it was quite normal.

the problem is we have a nation of morons who can barely speak one language, while we are surrounded by a world of countries where it is MANDATORY to learn a second language in school.

However, if this guy is saying he is doing it as a cost saving measure, I just don't get it?
