There's always a few people chiming in about how much post production that I do. I probably shouldn't let it both me but it does. I don't do that much post to my pictures and so I just wanted to show that with this thread.
Here is a recent "slam" from Abyss Al.....
Al (or Allen) has had a hard-on for me ever since his little run-in with Bobbi Billard (here's the story) back in 05'. I stepped in because Bobbi is a friend of mine and Al, being a fellow photographer, was not taking care of business. He apparently doesn't like to be called out when he fucks up but hey....that's the way things go with you fuck up.
He is of course referring to my contract with Twistys in his statement above and it's obvious that he has no idea what he's talking about. My year-long exclusive contract with Twistys ran out and it was not renewed because it's time for me to move on to face new challenges. It was fun while it lasted and I learned a lot and grew as a Photographer but now I'm having fun being a non-exclusive freelance shooter and shooting for a variety of clients. I still have a great relationship with Twistys contrary to what Allen (or anyone else) thinks.....Comment

Whatever you say LawrenceDean obviously possesses good technical photo skills and great equipment. No one can seriously argue with that, which raises questions about posts he makes such as this.
As you said Mutt, at most, a few people might criticize his pictures as looking over-produced and artificial (not everyone likes the glam style) - however, if you even hint at that to Dean, he has a hissy fit and calls you a hater.
Apparently in his mind, any criticism of his work means you must be jealous of his skills, and hence he creates threads like this to demonstrate his undisputable superiority as the best photographer in the universe, even though he is not (he's certainly better than I am at photography, but I consider many many photographers to be much better than I am, and many to be much better creatively/artistically than Dean is as well).
What Dean fails to perceive is that what people may actually be going after are not his photo skills, but instead, what might possibly be described as possibly a classic bipolar personality - since at times he comes across as being dominated by a huge ego on one side, coupled with a nagging sense of insecurity/need for acceptance on the other side (I think the clinical term is the Sleazy Dream syndrome - j/k).
I mean c'mon, no other photographer on GFY so shamelessly self-promotes himself week-after-week as Dean does (well, aside from Star 69), and then attacks anyone that critiques anything about his work.
Dean should just be happy to be making money shooting porn instead of weddings or portraits at Sears...because then he would really have something to bitch about, instead of starting these obviously contrived "everyone tell me how great I am" threads.
Since you obviously need to hear it Dean, those photos above rock (not hating, I mean it) - you are a photographic God!!! (okay, I'm teasing a bit there).
Oh, and please don't send me another threatening e-mail offline, they only prove my point about the bipolar thing...

Well said... I think not using a tool that makes the pictures better is silly. Why anyone wouldn't want to do everything they can to optimize their product is beyond me.Hate me because my clients love me. Hate me because models love working with me. Hate me because my posts get views and hate me because I'm just a nice guy. But don't hate me because I color correct & retouch my pictures. That's about the craziest shit I've ever heard in my life

for those who bitch about post production work - check out ANY mens magazine from playboy, penthouse to FHM, Maxim, shit even cosmopolitan and the rest, they ALL use photoshop.
I would say deans use of photoshop/post production is pretty much average in regards to mainstream use..

Dean, your work is beautifully shot BEFORE the retouching but I LIKE the retouching you do. You give the colors more vibrance, your images have a crisp look to them originally, and you have soft focuses and depth of field down in the originals... so your initial work is great. I think the look is very glamour, but who cares....? That's your market! It looks great! I love seeing the work you do on the forum every so often.

I never understood the argument that you shouldn't photoshop digital images. Is it not the modern equivalent of dark room work?
I don't think Dean's photos are photoshopped to a point that makes them cartoonish, as I see happen often with glamour work. The work after is subtle and adds just what it needs.

dude, there's nothing wrong with it... I used to do prepress for a print shop that did a lot of model comp cards, and we always had requests to touch up the images after we scanned the slides... Teeth whiter, remove moles, remove blemishes, tattoo's all kinds of stuff... its just business...Comment

There is definitely a market for artistic fantasy style porn photos, and Dean's work hits the nail on the head. High quality images all the way!
And after seeing the before and after comparison, I must say that the Photoshop work only shines up an already finely-cut gem.

it's a different world man ;-) The exotic dancer community up in portland is pretty different than most in the world. It's a bunch more personal and the guys tend to admire the girls more here. I hope i'm helping in that respect. Alot of the girls here in portland dancing are pretty nice and all of them on the black book are great people!Comment

As one who constantly photoshops his work - I always say...are we making a documentary, or entertainment?

The adult industry is about entertainment, not necessarily factual accuracy. Who really cares if a good-lookin' gal in a great photo has been photographically enhanced. If it looks good and the viewer gets his rocks off, it IS good.
Knowing the demographics of your audience and understanding what they want is key. If they want enhanced, post-edited images with flaws removed, lighting corrected, skintones compensated and a myriad of other changes made, so be it.
While I can identify with Dean's comments that started this thread, no amount of lamenting on the haters is going to change their jealous opinions. People hate - simply to fill the empty void in their own lives. It makes them feel better about themselves, reaching up the ladder to tug on the ankles of those above them.
It takes many years to develop the skill sets to make full use of Photoshop's capabilities - but it only takes a moment or two to toss out a bunch of non-constructive negativity about someone's work.
Its a no-brainer who deserves the merit.
Stay the course, Dean...your stuff is top drawer - and the devotion to your craft is appreciated by more than you probably realize. Leave the haters to wallow in their little hate-filled cesspools.Comment
