Have any of you rented a car and taken it out on the autobahn? Are there certain areas only that you can speed? If so are they close to Munich or out of the way? Any experiences you guys have with this would help.
i have hired cars from munich airport and gone on the autobahns up into the alps. I think from memory that there are only certain areas that you can go real quick, they are well sign posted tho.
there are areas around Munich with no limit. but there's also a lot of traffic which makes it less enjoyable. between midnight and 5 am on the other hand....
I lived in Wurzburg for 2 years and drove on the Autobahn every day to and from work. It's wide open. But if you're doing 160 mph and crash, don't expect to survive.
I did it..I had a 911 for about 6 hours..drove south through Bavaria to close to Austrian border...Max speed I hit was 293 klm and i was in 6th gear redlined going downhill... average cruising speed was 250 klm (150mph )...everyone gets out of your way and gives you a thumbs up when you pass...them nazi's classiest drivers in world...
I lucked out and got a friends of a friends car----new 2006 911 s4 ....anyway, google porsche rental in munich..several places that do it...

Exactly the reason we always leave for the Berlin show early in the morning. Can you say 309/hour!!!!!!

by far 1 of the neatest things i have done in life...I went through a couple 100 in gas....your driving above 5000 rpm almost entire time lol...every 20 miles or so you hit a town where you have to slow down which is great cause you get to shift a bunch at higher rpms...was so much FUN
Went to a show in Cologne last week.
Damn, I love the autobahn compared to the Dutch roads with the silly speed limits!!
150Mph+ gives me sweaty hands but a big thrill too
Do keep a distance to other cars Billy. Breaking at those speeds is something else and takes many seconds more then normal.
Then that is why this might not be something you would want to do. I haven't driven on it before so I might check it out. Judging from the responses it seems most people had a blast.
If you're itching to drive a fast car, there are many performance/exotic driving schools at racetracks which will let you take something fast out for an hour or two, with real racing instruction, and you get to turn too.

Already done this...Also fun...This is more of one of those things I just feel like doing. "I went to Germany and drove a Ferrari on the autobahn". No biggie just think it would be a fun experience.
