    Do you tip the cable guy? When is it someone's job?

    Honestly, I never tip them and I can't see why I would? Because they hooked up my cable?

    The guy that is the installer in our community came last week when we moved in. He kept telling me how he was giving us a deal by waiving all these new account fees. He even called the office and said, "Hey, this guy just bought his HDTV from Circuit City, I need to give him that CC discount.."

    Then he wouldn't stop talking about it. I had movers working getting our furniture in so things were hectic and the dude would not leave, he lagged around and after a while, it became obvious he wanted a tip. In addition, the guy said that he would order us a second HD box for the bedroom, of course, he never did that.

    I tipped the movers of course, but I began to wonder if people tip cable guys as well? I finally started unpacking boxes and he eventually left.

    Now, I didn't check his work and one of our outlets isn't working, so I have to call him again.

    I tip everyone pretty well. I tip waiters, movers, valet, baggage guys, airport guys....but I really think it has to end with the cable guy.

    Eventually, isn't is just your job?

    Does the bathroom attendant that puts a towel in my hand tip me when he signs up for one of our paysites? Would he have a job if we didn't by bottles at the club?

                      Is that the line of thinking? Whenever the workload is relative to making a cappucino?

                      Seriously, if it is, I will start tipping these guys. All he did was plug in a box to my TV, call in a code, and then annoy me for 45 minutes while one of our lines didn't even work.

                                          Can never understand why you guys in the states have to tip people, it would really shit the fuck out of me to have to give someone money when they are just doing their fucking job. Pretty much the only places in Australia that we tip people is in resteraunts/etc.

                                                          I'm not sure how it works by you, but say here, we have two cable providers, Time Warner and Charter. In the residential market, the entire installation must be completed by their installers or approved sub-contractors, (even though the majority of them are complete hacks and idiots that don't know the difference between RG-6 and and RG-59 and think natural gas pipes make suitable grounds).

                                                          These installers, be they direct employees OR subcontractors, are not allowed to accept gratuities, food, blowjobs etc. from clients.

                                                              I would tip the cable guy if there were some special circumstances to the installation, for example:

                                                              If it is raining/snowing: Sure, it's his job, but they have no control over the weather, and customers would freak out if they had to wait an extra day so they could watch Tyra on the CW.

                                                              If he has to crawl under the house: Hey you cheap bastard, you should have had your house pre wired when it was built.

                                                              If it's a weekend: Cable guys do most of their work on the weekends because you are too cheap to take a half day off to get your fix of Jerry Springer.

                                                              If he has to deal with your yapping, ankle biting little fuck of a rat you call a dog: Yeah, you know who you are.

                                                              If he has to deal with your yapping, bed-headed little bitch you call a wife/girlfriend: These should be kept in a portable dog kennel, just like the last creature.

                                                                          I really dont like the tipping culture yu have in the US - we have it here to an extent, bu no where near as bad.

                                                                          I like it in NZ - you tip when you get great service - so 9 times out of 10 thats what you get. Even then its reserved for service industries like waiters and room service.

                                                                          In NZ you are more likely to get a cab driver round down the fair to the nearest dollar and look a bit offended if you offer a tip.

                                                                              The responses here are fairly amusing, so let me give you my response, from the cable guy's perspective.

                                                                              I used to do telephone installations as an employee of GTE, then later on as an independent with my own company.

                                                                              While working for the telephone company I may have had one guy (probably from NY, they tip everyone for everything) give me a $20 on the side. Other than that, the only tips I got were occasionally some coke or weed by a guy, or sex from some chick. I never expected a tip, and it was always a surprise when given.

                                                                              When I had my own company my rates were very reasonable, and there were several instances when a customer might throw in an extra $20, or tell me to keep the change.

                                                                              Again, not expected, but surely appreciated.

                                                                              That being said, it has never crossed my mind to tip a cable guy, telephone man, plumber, electrician, or any other such service.

                                                                              I will tip my gardener and maids around Christmas.

The taxi at CH2 was a van with a ramp in the back. We sat outside of CH2 and stared at the guy, waved, finally after 5 minutes when he was finished on the phone he pulled up. We get in. He doesn't strap me in. It made for quite the wild ride.

                                                                                                                                      The last one chewed me out for having too many splitters and cables all over the place. They are not responsible for the inside the house but he walked in to check if all was OK and went off, he fuckin lost it. Telling me how much signal I was loosing for each splitter and all the connectors were not properly attached to the ends of the cables that I had done myself.

                                                                                                                                      So he put me all new connectors on and took off all the splitters except one, turns out the problem was outside. He put down a temp cable til they can get it put underground.

                                                                                                                                      So no, they can go fuck themselves, no tip from me.

Basically, you walk down to get your car from valet then one guy grabs the bags to store them. You wait for your car, when it arrives, one guy brings your bags and then another guy is standing there to load the bags and another guy is handing you keys while waiting to close the door for you.

                                                                                                                                                              not sure how it works where you are, but our cable installers get paid $250 to do any extras here, i.e. crawling in the basement or attic crawl space

                                                                                                                                                              weekends are always extra money for cable guys, or they are the weekend guys that haven't worked all week

                                                                                                                                                              as for the bitching wife, then yeah, tip him $200-300...easy!

                                                                                                                                                                                  Get out of a taxi and some random person runs up to open the door and expects a tip. Get your groceries and someone runs up to put it in a bag and expects a tip. Go to walk into anything and someone decides to open a door, park your car and pay a fee orelse your car gets scratched to shit. Granted it wasn't much money, but fuck me - need to carry around a few thousand coins every time you went outside...
