Good piece.

I'm not a fan of censorship of course... and I wince every time I see it on certain TV channels, and even on the radio when certain words of certain songs are blanked out. I think that at 2 am, I as an adult should be able to see a movie in it's uncut form. If kids somewhere are still up and might be watching, isn't that the responsiblity of their parents? I find it a bit ridiculous that A&E airs the Sopranos but makes sure all the "cuss words" are nicely rinsed out of the mix. Why air the Sopranos at all if you can't show it the way it was originally made and intended to be seen?


HOWEVER... there's always a however... there are a few instances where I'm not a big fan of foul language. For one, I don't find it particularly attractive in a woman. Swearing and cussing has it's place but holy shit, I've found myself saying "enough already" when a woman I'm seeing goes mental with it. I'm certainly not motivated to take her to meet the parents.

But the thing, the situation, that bothers me the most I think is when.... let's say you're out to dinner with your parents (or your grandparents), and those parents or grandparents are the type who grew up in the 30's, 40's, etc. Most people (not all) from that era do not want to hear a bunch of foul language even at the worst of times, but add in a nearby table full of idiots who think it's okay to sit in a public place and run off at the mouth with "fuck this" and "fuck that".... I'm sorry but that's a situation where I'm apt to say something.

So I suppose I'm saying there's a time and a place for everything. Swearing and cussing doesn't have to ruin people's day, you can turn the station on a radio or TV if you don't like what's on, yes, but it gets harder to tune it out when you're sitting in a restaurant and you've already ordered and be subjected to a loud-talking potty mouth sitting nearby who is too ignorant to understand that not everyone wants to hear their shit talk.

Fact: people swear. But it's also a fact that other people don't want to fucking hear your swearing. I suppose the solution is to use some common sense, no?

But yeah... the whole free speech thing has taken a hit in the last 10 years with conservatives getting more and more time in Congress, ect..

I also agree with CDSmith that some people's use of "profane" language is disgusting in some situations. Like recently I was at a eating establishment and one of the waitresses was saying "fuck this, fuck that" every 5 seconds, and there was some older woman (60s) sitting across from me... I gave a "whew..." type look at her and smiled... some people over do it...

But, overall it should be protected everywhere and let everyone say what they want... leave the place if you don't like it.
