What kind of tests did you do if sales went up? No offence, but if well done, xsales have zero influence on initial sales.

well its been more than just the cross sales its been the tweaking our join pages also.This isn't to say that cross sales are bad, but that we noticed that initial sales went up with the removal of cross sales along with tweaking text and images on our join pages. In an economy where people are being more frugal than ever people are seeing the value in non cross sale sites

They must have, even if it's only the people who have been stung before and now avoiding joining sites with cross sales on.

I have tried both, on all kinds of traffic, didn't see any difference in initial sales. I think its more the tweaking of the join page that helped in the above case.
