Always Repond To American Express Alerts

Got an email today from American Express saying that I had a "suspicious" charge on my Platinum business card.

The charge was for ONE DOLLAR to Netflix.

I thought: "That's weird"

So I logged into my account to make sure the email wasn't b.s. And sure enough I had a "fraud alert" in my account.

I called the 800 number and they promptly answered...no long wait.

Well the one dollar to NetFlix must have been a test on my card to make sure it was good. Because within an hour I had paid college tuition for somebody in Canada for a few grand and had bought a $1500 airline ticket out of South Africa! lol

They shut the card down and have a new one being overnighted to me.

I must say that American Express customer support is second to none.

AMEX has always been on the ball with shit like that. They have caused me an inconvenience or two when I fucked up and didn't call them to tell them I was traveling out of the country, but well worth it when they catch shit like this.

AMEX Plat is very good at this, 100% of my biz spending goes on AMEX (oh, i had to use my VISA to pay for Phoenix Forum few days ago) .

What I hate is BofA Visa, they will put a hold , never call and you will find out when the card bounces when you are eating out with a client.

Yeah, I've gotten annoyed with them a time or two when traveling and got declined and had to get on the phone. But now that this happened....I'm damn glad that they are that strict.

How can someone pay for college tuition with someone's credit card and think they are not going to be caught? Isn't there someone sitting in a chair going to have to answer some questions that extend beyond the current curriculum?

My friend told me that his wife had her Amex card stolen a few weeks ago...i asked if he had contacted the police ,he replied " Not at the moment as it seems the thief is only spending half of what my wife ususally does "

On a more serious note : ( Not Amex) One of my co -workers had thier identity stolen and the thieves ordered satellite tv installation etc so it was easy to trace them but here is the kicker....
the bank decided not to press charges against them as they didnt want the publicity and details of how it happened becomming public.

I wonder how many times this happens ....

Ps..My co-worker got thier money back ..charges cancelled etc but it still sucks to see them get away with it !

I pay a monthly fee to equifax who sends me email alerts anytime something changes in any of my bank & credit accounts. For $12.95 a month I get piece of mind that my hard earned $$$ a being monitored. Just FYI to those concerned about cc fraud and identity theft.

Although im not disputing that its not a good service..isnt that really just alerting you to something that has already happened rather than any actual prevention ?

I wish every place took Amex. They have saved my ass and they protect you like no other.

Even when it comes to taxes they have it perfectly figured out. I have a business plat with them now and thinking of getting a personal plat with them too, just to help separate things when it comes to taxes

Love my Amex cards.. Years and years ago when I first got the personal Platinum we went on a shopping trip out of state. After the third big purchase in the same mall on the same day, when the card was swiped they wanted the merchant to call. Amex wanted me on the phone. They asked me the middle name of my first born son. Got home the next day and they called my house and asked me what I'd told them on the phone the day before.

I've had BofA be weird on me before. I primarily use my BofA debit visa card. Last Fall at a large local fair, I used it at a non-system cash machine at the fairgrounds.. the machine didn't have any cash so I headed to the next one. That one gave me a weird message. Tried again.. totally locked it out. I spent 40 mins on a Saturday afternoon in a crowded place on the phone getting to the right person so that I could tell them the last 3 times I'd used the card and for what dollar amounts before they told me they'd take the hold off which was supposed to be immediate but took another hour.

Their systems for flagging up suspicious things meant that when someone managed to do a £3500 ($5300) balance transfer off of my card last year everything got sorted out really quickly

On a downside though I used the card I usually use only for internet stuff to buy a new battery for my car at a garage and that got the card blocked for being an out-of-character purchase
