Ever been sprayed with pepper spray?

Last night walking home from the pub with a mate, there were ~30, 15 to 16 year olds on the foreshore and just as we approached 2 or 3 of them got into an altercation.

The cops were quick to get the pepper spray out and randomly spray it all over the shop.

Now we got caught up in some of the spray and it was actually scary how potent it was. Felt like I couldn't breathe and eyes watered instantly. Remembering i was 2 sheets to the wind at the time(normally don't feel a thing when drunk) and today my throat feels like someone stuck razor blades down there.

Not real happy right now and I really hope the cops got a taste of that spray - pricks have destroyed my saturday.

Can't even begin to imagine how horrible that would have been.

We didn't even get a direct hit and it was shocking. How long did the effects of a shot to the face take to wear off and were there any side effects? The whole not being able to breathe part was freakin scary for me.

That's about what happened with us, except we were about 5 metres away. Not very bloody nice stuff really

hahaha... good luck with bear mace. seriously... if you think you need protection from a bear, you need a lot more than mace. i have sprayed it on brown bears for fun and all it did was piss them off. the only time brown bears or black bears attack people are when they are startled, have young with them or are defending feeding grounds. if you find yourself on the wrong end of any of those situations... they are hard animals to stop.

my father is a brown bear guide in alaska as were many of my friends. i grew up in alaska. where we used to commercial salmon fish in the summer down on the alaska peninsula (port moller) - brown bears are like rats. everywhere. every night they would come down out of the brush and start cruising the beaches looking for dead shit to eat (seals, sea lions, salmon - whatever) and were all around the house. we had one shack that over looked the beach and we put fish right in front of it, climbed up on the roof and waited. finally 2 bears came and we started screwing with them until one came up to us, on his hind legs trying to get a closer look. we emptied a can of it right into his face and it did absolutely nothing. just pissed it off.

that being said, i have spent the first 20 years of my life in those surroundings, not to mention continually hunting. i have seen bears take a shitload of abuse. my father shot one once 8 or 10 times with a 300 magnum before it stopped and died. i saw another one get shot 6 times with a .12 gauge - 3 slugs, 3 with buckshot... as it charged us. blew all the skin right off his face.

the idea of relying on spraying a bear with mace when being attacked is exactly like telling a woman "yeah, just kick the guy in the nuts" - respond to agression with agression... and you get 2 times more agression in return. every single time.

this guy is the only one i have found that took pics and kept them online.

gives you an idea of what daily life was like - .44 at the hip, .12 gauge in hand just to go for a walk on the beach.

i've read a couple of books on the subject. black bears don't react to spray as well as grizzlies, which is the reason i carry it. i've had many, many encounters with black bears, and they always run away when approached, other than the odd time where you might have to clap your hands and yell.

http://www.amazon.com/Bear-Attacks-T.../dp/0941130827 is a great book on the subject.

it's been shown that when all other forms of avoidance of a grizzly have been exhausted, bear spray is a reasonably effective deterrent. of course it is far less likely to run into a grizzly. black/brown bears pratically infest the area i live in, but do not present much of a concern. in fact, there has only been one (non-lethal) bear attack in the history of the Whistler area.

we once snared a brown bear too by hoisting a 55 gallon drum up into a tree next to the house and filling it with sand for a counter weight. it was right next to the house where they would walk at night, once we caught one, it went fucking berzerk as it was hanging there and tore open a huge hole in the side of the house. sounded like a funny idea before we did it. wasn't so funny after we actually caught one.

before living in Whistler, I spent many years in Banff, where grizzlies are much more prevalent. still love to spend time hiking there in the summers.

the idea of relying on spraying a bear with mace when being attacked is exactly like telling a woman "yeah, just kick the guy in the nuts" - respond to agression with agression... and you get 2 times more agression in return. every single time.

this guy is the only one i have found that took pics and kept them online.

gives you an idea of what daily life was like - .44 at the hip, .12 gauge in hand just to go for a walk on the beach.
i saw a documentary about a guy that lived in alaska filming brown bears, used to walk right up to them to film. He carried no weapons at all, finally one of the bears decided he looked tasty.

http://www.amazon.com/Bear-Attacks-T.../dp/0941130827 is a great book on the subject.

it's been shown that when all other forms of avoidance of a grizzly have been exhausted, bear spray is a reasonably effective deterrent. of course it is far less likely to run into a grizzly. black/brown bears pratically infest the area i live in, but do not present much of a concern. in fact, there has only been one (non-lethal) bear attack in the history of the Whistler area.

brown bears and black bears are generally very flighty animals. the few times i was hiking or mountain biking with friends where we had a good chance or surprising an animal, we always would make as much noise as we possible. usually, they will get out of the area... thats why you almost never see them. the problem is when you are hiking and you happen into them or startle them or they have young. then they will usually attack.

yeah... i think it was pretty clear that he was a nut and he wanted to die. they are really flighty animals, if you can get close to them because they are distracted feeding, thats the exact wrong time to try to get close to them.
