socialengine looks good on the outside but can't handle large amounts of users... just like 90% of the social scripts they're designed by developers who dont stress test there scripts/coding. They're perfect for few hundred users online but once you get 500-1000+ they'll all start to give problems. Best suggestion build your own cause more than likely you'll be spending the extra money to fix all the php/mysql load problems

I totally disagree with you on socialengine not being able to handle massive loads. Do your HW and google it. I just purchased a copy and going into beta soon. Hopefully it work out well.
With Social Engine you purchase the parts you need. When you purchaes it, you own the source so you can edit how you feel. There are many companies out there that do nothing but edit these scripts for their clients.
