Firstly, I was hoping this was going to end up as some sort of joke. Oh well. :D

I disagree with his technique because it may make it difficult to figure out where the car in the mirror is with respect to your own car. It may also be more difficult to get the up/down adjustment correct since you can't reference your car body. You're also just shifting the blind spot... it's still there, with his method you may not be able to see a bike riding close to your passenger side.

Remember your mirrors are only part of the sequence, you still need to glance over your shoulder to cover your blind spot...

        Check mirrors
        Signal
        Head check
        Move

This has always been common sense to me. I usually make sure I can't see any of my own car. If you adjust it this way while driving on a 2 lane highway, you can test it by getting in the right lane and letting a car pass on the left. When he goes out of view in the side mirror, the nose of his car should already be visible in your peripheral vision.

My mother in law borrowed my car recently and she turned my driver mirror all the way in, so she could see the whole damn car. I was like "what the hell are doing, trying to get your self killed?" She said this is how she always drives. This now explains her 2 famous car accidents.

I like to see some of the side of my ride also. I have no idea if this guy is FOS or not.

But I have big mirrors on my truck so maybe i'm ok.

But I have never come across any directions on how to set your mirrors before. ANd I have been driving for 28 years.

Like I said, if you can see any of your car = more likely to have blind spot. Not guaranteed, but likely.

The way I adjust my mirrors is to take them just past the point where I can see the edge of the car. That way I can see who's in the process of passing me. Of course you ALWAYS must look over your shoulder in any direction you wish to change lanes into... this is something many drivers do not do... and has resulted in many close-calls for me as I'm overtaking slower traffic, etc.

But fortunately I haven't had a car accident in over 12 years now.

Well, you're probably an alert driver and just aware of what's going on around you on the highway. But, there's no reason to be able to see your own car, unless you like to admire the paint job.

that part of the video at 1:46 says it all. Having the mirrors pointed more inward will turn them into a rear view mirror, which is not what you want when you're changing lanes.

i played around with my mirrors today and these truck mirrors it really doesn't matter if the side of your vehicle is visible, i could see the side of my truck and the vehicle in the other lane as it came up, through and past it's blind spot until it was visible next to me

so i guess bigger is better in this scenario

for me i need to see down by my wheel allot as well as the back corner of my bed when i'm backing around and maneuvering around branches and logs in the woods or in other (close quarter) situations.

I was wondering if you followed his ideas or not. I decided to try it for a while since it was nothing like how I was trained to set up mirrors.

I did it exactly how he said to do it and I was never as scared to drive as I was with this setup. I tried it for a good week or so, but things like backing up and parallel parking were a pain.

I brought them in a little so it was about half way between what I was accustomed to and the way he said to do it. I think I am getting used to it.

Ive had it on my cars for about 2 weeks now. it does help with highway driving, but is a pain when parking I agree. My mirrors fold down when in reverse, but I really have to lean over to see the curb. Only other problem is they are maxed out to the side

In the past ive used those blind spot mirrors but I hate the way they look

The guy doesnt even mention putting on your turn signal before changing lanes. He also is talking about changing lanes over a solid line, and he's also got 2 cars stopped illegally on a roadway. hehe, ok well.. the turn signal thing is a pet peeve and it's also the law, so we should be using it.

Not seeing ANY of your own car in them feels more dangerous at least to me because you can't really see where someone is at in relation to your own car. That's not to say half your mirror should be taken up by your own car, but a sliver of it for that purpose. As it is, I can usually look at the mirrors at a different angle to see the blind spot anyways. There's enough idiots on the road that I usually look at them normally, look at the different angle, then look over my shoulder before I change lanes anyways.

Good post. Some twanger on the motorway nearly side slammed me because I was in their blindspot while overtaking. Could have been real hairy.

Funny timing, I saw a crash this morning at the roundabout, car pulls straight into the roundabout with another already half way round it. Smashed straight into the side of it, spun 180 degrees and ended up in the middle of the roundabout. Odd seeing it in slow motion.

There's no amount of mirror adjustment that can help with stupidity.

You should be able to see all of those areas in your driving position. Then look aver your shoulder left and right when pulling off or changing lanes to look into the blind spots!
