The internet was a little different back then. Symbolics was the name of that guy's computer company, and the internet was made up pretty much only of government, universities, computer companies and government contractors.

.com was for companies, .net was for networking and .org was a catch-all for other organizations, and they stuck to that.

But he had the last laugh because just on the basis of it being the oldest .com, he recently sold it for what's speculated to be 6-figures. I know the guy who bought it and while the figure is non-disclosure, knowing him he paid a pretty penny for it considering there is only one OLDEST domain and he has it...cool for collector's sake.

I have a 1990 domain, 20 years old now as it was regged in Feb 1990, SynNet.com. It's for sale for mid $x,xxx if anyone wants it.

I had 1 that I registered in 1999, but sold it last year. Prior to 1999 I have 3 others registered in 1997/1998, but dropped those in like 1999 or 2000. At this point my oldest ones are maybe 4 or 5 years old.

You are missing a big part of the story here with this domain, the guy that owns it now isn't the original owner, and as someone already said, the internet and it's purpose was a whole lot different back then when it became the first "official" domain registered.

Anyone care to take a guess on who hosts the "oldest" registered domain?
