    who's your voip provider

who do you buy your voip service from? been using packet8 for a little over a year but i am seeing cheaper alternatives now and thinking about switching, but i don't want to stiff myself and end up with some crap service for a fraction of the price. who are you using and what does it cost you?

    MagicJack.

I've used a bunch of them. MagicJack is right up there with the best of them. And at $20 a year, I don't think it can get cheaper.

They also have those units (Best Buy carries them) that you buy for $250 or so and then never have a phone bill. Can't think of the name though.

    Spend you some brain.

        Yep. Its a dongle.

Any VOIP system you get has to be plugged into something for it to work

            Hi,

For $100.00 per year - www.voipo.com is great!.

We use packet8, voipo, and voip.ms

Voipo never misses a beat, unlimited, lots of features, etc. You must use there ata (adapter) box and connect it to a regular phone..

Once you connect the ata to a router or switch, your making phone calls in 1 minute or so - easy, breezy

voip.ms is very cheap, been around a long time and you can use your own adapter or digital ip phone / sip phone...

Order tele #'s instantly, toll free, intl, etc.

            Thanks

            Todd

Well I would call again, I am in the voip forums alot and never have heard of this, also - try posting in there forums at http://forums.voipo.com

From the time we submitted the port requests (number transfer), it took about 7-8 days to move from p8 to voipo. no problems what-so-ever

The only time there could ever be a problem with a voip to voip transfer is if your number you have now happens to be in a rate center that the new provider doesn't service. I have heard of this happening but very very rare...

The reviews on ooma are ok but the problem is, how long will they be around??

Sure you pay $250.00 for the hardware and unless you signup for there pro service or whatever it's called you don't pay for phone calls again... Can ooma survive on this biz model?

I think sunrocket uses this model too and finally went down a yr or 2 ago....

I don't like the terms and conditions tied to MagicJack. Nor do I enjoy the idea of needing to be at a computer to place a call - which is a double standard since I'm always at an effing computer.

I've used a few different providers, but I recently dropped Packet8 myself due to their inability to keep the damn thing working and just blaming it elsewhere when I've had calls to almost all toll-free dying (only) for over a month.

I used Sunrocket. It was $69 a year the deal we got...prepaid. I think the equipment they sent out cost more than that. That could be why they went under. I prepaid for 3 years and they didn't make it a year with that setup. Ooma I think stands a better chance...granted they sell the units. Even if they only make it two years, you still end up saving money.

You don't have to be at the computer to use MagicJack. I have a regular wireless phone and get reception at anyplace in the house. My dongle is connected into a media server tucked into an office closet. I haven't seen it since plugging it in.

Call quality for MagicJack is right up there too. For $20 it really can't be beat.

I hear you on p8, we have them for yrs and yrs - they seem to be having some issues lately, with voipo - not 1 issue..

Also, if you make alot or mostly toll free dialing, you can buy a ata, like a linksys pap2t-na for like 50.00 or so, and connect it to a few voip providers who will not charge you 1 cent to make toll free calls, as they make some money on those....

mabey use voip.ms, get the unlimited inbound plan - I forget, 4-8.00 per month, and dial out toll free for free and other calls in the us, think 1/2 to 1 cent per minute

p8 keeps dropping calls on me, sometimes i have to dial 2 - 3 times before it actually puts the call through as well..

I didn't have the dropped calls problem but I have had the redial issue for soo long... doesn't connect, hit redial, etc..

Wierd thing is, for along time we had our p8 biz lines at our old office on a fast fios line, network setup great, etc.... had to redial all the time - other voip providers - not a problem at all.

We get a bigger warehouse / office and can't get fios there - so we get comcast biz, no more problems with p8, haven't had to re-dial once, always connects first time... is that wierd or what??? same network setup, routers, etc...

                                          hmmmm

I have been with packet8 for maybe 6 or more years now? It has done me well. The only little annoyance is that if I don't dial the number with incredible speed it does an error message and makes me start again.

Very much so and now that the number I have is a local one to my parent's it saves them a ton too.

                                                  I use www.phonepower.com

Bought it when I moved into my new house and I'm about to get rid of it. There was nothing wrong with the service, I just don't use it enough to justify paying for it. I'm mainly on my cell phone and that costs me 4x as much so I might as well use that instead.

Are you talking just basic phone or full VoIP capability? I used Teliax in the past when I was running my own Asterisk PBX. They were really cheap, $5 per number and pay as you go for the minutes.

I use T-mobile for my home phone. Plugs in to my router. Unlimited calls for $10/mo. I am very happy with them. No dropped calls and quality is great. Better then when I was with comcast for $45/mo
