I dated a guy who couldn't care less about what people thought about his cars. He'd buy old junkers for <$500, put about $100 or so in work into them, drive them for 6 months, then sell them for $1000+. One of my favorites he had was an old Volare because we could say it had "Rich Corinthian Leather"....Trucks were his favorite though, especially the imports because once he replaced a part or two, they'd be ready to drive another 100K miles. Last I talked to him, he was restoring VW vans for quite a tidy profit. You could hear him from a block away ;)
He also put his Harley together himself. He claimed you couldn't say you were a REAL Harley rider unless you put it together yourself, lol.
He went to Vanderbilt. Not exactly an idiot. Just enjoyed tinkering. Which was great for me because he'd go into the kitchen to get a drink and 20 minutes later all the handles and hinges on my cabinets would be tightened
