    When you ask for separate checks, the waitresses eyes roll into the back of her head.

    And she's fucking right.

    That's why when I go out with a group, I pick up the tab if necessary. I don't want to wait because you want your $12 entree separate.

              I had an old friend that is now an accountant and him and his gf would calculate their meals,tax,tip etc... with a calculator and seperate it from me and my gf meals at the time, pissed me off so I would grab the bill and pay the whole thing, if your broke don't go out, I don't talk to them anymore.

                                              If out with other guy/guys everyone throws cash at the total or one of us justs picks it up. If girlfriend and I are out with another couple we take turns with the total. All works out in the end.

                                                              I don't see why it's so odd to split a bill with somebody. Paying for somebody else's meal gets expensive. Especially if they are ordering something more than you are.

                                                                      My cell phone has an app for splitting checks.
                                                                      I don't see what the big deal is.
                                                                      The server is there to serve you...as long as you tip well, they shouldn't care. I've dated my fair share of servers in life and although they bitched about everything under the sun, they were never concerned with something so trivial.

                                                                      I'm thinking this thread is more for the OP's ego. He wants to seem all pimp because he wants to pick up checks when picking up checks is the courteous thing to do, anyway.

                                                                      One thing I'll do...if I'm treating and someone that never orders the most expensive thing on the menu suddenly goes for it, I won't say anything but it will be the last time they ever get a free meal from me. When someone treats me, I purposefully stay away from the more expensive items.

                                                                                                                          I still remember my junior prom I went with a group of like 10 people (myself included) to this pretty expensive restaurant.

                                                                                                                          Of the group the bill was around 500 bucks, the guys were paying so we were trying to figure out the split since everyone had something different. I was the only person who got a salad with dinner (no more than 15 bucks) and somehow when I put in my share and "everyone else did too" we were still 80 dollars short of the bill itself, much less tip included.

                                                                                                                          After forking over the difference + tip I decided to pay attention to how much people were putting towards the bill in those situations or simply remember what people had and how much it was. Having a photographic memory and being pretty good with numbers helps. Haven't had that problem since then but it was absurd.

                                                                                                                          I think if you tell the waiter/waitress before you order that you'd like your bill to be split it's not a big deal. Having bartended I didn't mind when people came up and said they were paying separate. What annoyed me was when a group of 5+ would order different drinks, I'd ring it in together for the total THEN they'd tell me everyone is paying for their own and only one guy would tip.

                                                                                                                                              It's not really a problem I've run into recently, but we do have a set of friends- a married couple- that are just deadbeats. They aren't close friends and we don't hang out with them one on one, but there was a time when they would join us and about 4 or 5 other friends for sushi on occasion. The ritual was everyone would pass up the cash and we would wind up paying the tab.

                                                                                                                                              As this went on the gap between what I was getting at the end of the meal and what we were paying started to get larger and larger. Eventually it just got rediculous. Long story short they don't go out to eat anymore w/ us. Sucks, but if someone tries to freeload they aren't really friends.

                                                                                                                                              If someone can't pay their way, if they're upfront about it I don't have a problem picking it up for them, it's when someone assumes or tries to skate by when I get offended. Everyone has ups and downs, we all take turns supporting eachother, but I try to not get in the habbit of throwing money around too much, I don't want to feel like I'm buying my friends.

                                                                                                                                                      being the GM of a resturant too that would irk me so much.. knowing that my servers ask them is this on one or seperate they say one.. themn come to the register and say can I split this up .... one time 5 buisness guys came in and ordered about 55 dollars worth of food my server goes this on one check or seperste one of them said i got it so after words he was like we need this seperated after an exchange of words with the serer i walked over to the table like is there a problem here after hearing their side i said no problem let me take care of this picked up the check sat it back down and said you owe 11.. you owe.. 11 etc.... needless to say.. they were bankers lol

                                                                                                                                                              Seven or eight years ago there was 30 of us that would get together every Saturday, usually 15-20 of us would go to dinner together before we went out for the night. There is no way a server can split a bill that big so we would all just chip in, but there was always one that wouldn't pay up, it took us months to figure out who it actually was because the group was so big,. But as soon as we figured it out he didn't go out with us anymore.

                                                                                                                                                                          I'm talking about the kind of restaurants where the average meal is $25 but because someone else is paying, the usually broke person goes for the $55 filet mignon when anytime they're paying they order a cheeseburger. It's called common courtesy and not taking advantage of a situation.
