The key to avoiding those (and of course, on your face as well fellas), is to:

1. Don't shave to hard. Pressing down while shaving will give you a close shave, but often, the skin will close up over the hairs, producing lil' zits later.
2. Don't shave over the same spot many times. If you have to constantly shave over the same spot, get a new blade.
3. Don't go against the grain. Again, this will cut the hairs to short, and skin will grow over.
4. Don't touch your face (or other shaved area) with your hands. Your hands are the dirtiest part of your body, keep them away from your face.

Pretty simple.
