Living in LA, expensive or not?

Wondering how much a normal family spends a month while living in Los Angeles?
How much people should earn to live a happy life there?

depends on where in LA you want to live and what you like to do.

"LA" is a HUGE area that covers everything from the coast to desert like inland areas. If you want to live by the water, expect to pay 2 to 3x more than if you live in the valley.

I lived there from 2004-2008 and when I left i was paying $2800/mo in rent to live near the water in Marina del Rey. It was a decent 2bd/2ba place, but thats the price to be near the beach.

My friend is getting a 4bd house in the valley for $2100 a month... so just depends on where and what you want, but all around LA is probably more expensive than other places outside of Miami, NYC and Boston

I paid $1k/mo. for a 600 sq ft apt that was located 50 miles east of LA. The apts were later turned into condos, our unit was selling for nearly $400k.

Look to earn about $130k a year for a single guy living in LA if you want to avoid living the bum-lifestyle.

Friends don't let friends live in the Valley. But then I'm a Westside snob, and live near the beach in Santa Monica.

As a previous poster wrote, the rent you pay depends on where you live.

If what you mean by avoiding the bum lifestyle is not having to use the soup line to eat and being able to afford a place to stay dry while you jerk off by yourself, yes 130k should cover it.

i tried to tell him to look into Palms or Culver City, but he insists on living in a detached house and your not going ot find that anywhere on the westside for less than $4k a month

You need to get a permit to stay first of all. Then worry about the lifestyle.

Really just depends where you live and how you want to live more then anything. You can live here cheap or if you want to live good its going to cost you big time.

Moving out of LA was hands down the best decision I could have ever made in my life.
