Google dropping IE6 support!! - WOOT!

    http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/3116...orer-6-support

Google has warned that from 1 March, users may find that some older browsers no longer work with its Google Docs and Google Sites products. The search company named IE6 in particular as a target.

Google says: "Many other companies have already stopped supporting older browsers like Internet Explorer 6.0 as well as browsers that are not supported by their own manufacturers. We?re also going to begin phasing out our support, starting with Google Docs and Google Sites. As a result you may find that from 1 March key functionality within these products -- as well as new Docs and Sites features -- won?t work properly in older browsers".

The 8-year-old browser, which was launched in 2001 but replaced in October 2006 by IE7, has already been the target of a co-ordinated campaign by more than 70 companies, including Google's own YouTube. Microsoft, the browser's creator, has even offered to donate $1.15 to charity for every person that ditches the ancient software. Even the French and German governments have warned against IE6, but the British government has so far refused to upgrade.

Google adds: "The web has evolved in the last ten years, from simple text pages to rich, interactive applications including video and voice. Unfortunately, very old browsers cannot run many of these new features effectively. So to help ensure your business can use the latest, most advanced web apps, we encourage you to update your browsers as soon as possible".

Google recommends IE7+, Firefox 3+, Chrome 4+ and Safari 3+ for upgraders. You might want to look at Opera 10+, too.
I dunno about you ... but I am glad. This is coupled with the recent German Gov announcement to the public urging them to stop using IE!

Google is the biggest website on the net, and I suspect would rank as THE most quoted site name by internet users if asked to name a site. So I think it's likely that now that Google have done it, others will soon follow suit.

Can only be good news for designers and developers!!!

Why would you use IE6? You can use IE8 for XP pro (SOOOOOOOOO much better!!!!!!).

I have Windows 7 Ultimate, so I have the Windows XP Licence built into the 7 licence, meaning I can use IE6 in XP to test. But within a year, I think it's a safe bet that 99% of sites wont care about IE6 anymore.

I notice a LOT of sites using stuff that isn't possible with IE6 and many sites simply putting up a page saying "Upgrade your IE to use our site).

Smart moves. Forcing people to update is the best way. Even on older Win OS's, IE6 really isn't neccessary. And a lot of organisations who think they have to stick with IE6 are wrong ... they can update to IE7 or 8 and usually find everything works the same.

Since both of those have the 'break a site like IE6' mode! :D LOL!

I'll add here now ... I simply don't recommend any other browser other than Google Chrome now. I've used it extensively since it came out and it's definitely my broswer of choice. I have all the major browsers installed for testing and keep them up to date ... but I wont recommend any others now that Chrome is kicking ass ... with extensions etc.

my wifes laptop has the new windows 7 on it but have not tried installing any of my bootleg software photoshop 7, dreamweaver, frontpage, etc. Will these programs work on Windows 7? or only on Windows 7 unlimate edition? I would hate to have to spend money on new programs.
