People who sell internet domains/sites for years worth of income...

Say someone sells a domain for 3 years worth of income.

    sounds reasonably fair, right?

but isn't the internet a place where things change VERY quickly compared to other businesses?

if a domain is getting some 1000 uniques a day today from type-in, what are the odds it will maintain the type-in traffic 3 years from now?

with the average surfer getting smarter by the day, isn't it a matter of time until type ins are replaced by SE relevance searches? (for example)

    let's discuss!

in case of generic names I'd say there are about 90% chances that the name will receive similar (+/- 15%) traffic in 3 years from now, assuming it's not a domain referring to a declining industry

in case of adult names the risk may be greater because of .xxx

since a few years they are more or less stable, you can assume they will be similar in 3 years from now too

but in 10 years+.... you can only guess

it's the risk you need to make , business is about risks , to make money you need to spend money , need to take that educated leap of faith and hope that you'll land on your feet

its the same with everything , from buying that home to buying that car , buying that home how do you know the interest rates are going to stay the same or that the government takes your home in order to build a new freeway , or that new suv that you just brought wont become illegal due to them banning petrol (ok it might be extreme but..)

what it comes down to , is that is the value someone has put on the domain, if you don't think its a fair price well then you can choose not to buy , or try and negotiate a better price

Adult generally goes for way less than a few years income.

a lot depends on what market the domain is in and the stability/sources of traffic...

Typical adult domains (developed) that I have seen in the last while seem to go aorund 1 year of income. Names only go for all sorts of amounts, often with little to do with actual income and more to do with things like potential, brandability, or the desire of the buyer to build a site that matches that name.

I have sold adult domains for 20 years of current income, because income was low and the buyer wanted the domain because of the domain, not because of it's current income.

As long as people continue to find relevant content or links to relevant content on the domains they type-in they will continue to grow.
