I was in Cancun (from vancouver as well) about 2 years ago we stayed in the Riu Palace.. it's a great place and if you're a hardcore drink (I'm not) you will absolutely love it.. but for some reason I feel bad for the people in mexico. I just got back from a 2 week trip to hawaii and I much prefer hawaii to cancun..

Riu Palace was a very nice hotel though, the food was really good.. Make sure you swim with the dolphins, and unless you're a big history buff don't bother with the trip out to the ruins.
