I'm announcing a contest to design a layout for a Sopranos Blog. The design must incorporate the feel of the show and have a nice flow to it. The name of the blog will be "The Sopranos". You do not need to code a the site, I am just looking for a layout. The design will be adapted into a wordpress template later, so that must also be taken into consideration. The contest will run until February 4th. The prize for the contest will be $150 and a link to your mainstream site(if you have one) for a 3 month period. If you are knowledgable in wordpress coding and code the site too, I'll add an extra $100 to the pot to make it a potential $250 for the winner. Have fun with the contest and enjoy a link on a mainstream site that is soon to have a tremendous traffic boost come March.

Here's a tip.
When having a "contest" for a design, first prize should be ALOT more than what you would normally pay for a design.
Why would somebody design something that you may or may not pay for....and their only reward will be their normal price "IF" you pick them?
For instance a professional logo should cost you around $250. If you have a logo contest first prize should be around $1000. Otherwise there's really no incentive for the designers to design something on the chance that they might get paid for it.

It's a fair amount for just an uncoded template. These contests go for less on the mainstream forums like Sitepoint, Namepros, and the quality is pretty good compared to these so far. While GFY does have some talented designers, I think he'd get better results on the mainstream sites that do this regularly, and with less bitching because the ones who want to participate do, and the ones who don't want to just don't.
I'm not a designer but I know I watch the contest threads to find a designer for projects I have. I look to see who the better designers are, and I contact them to see if they're interested in more paid work. What do you expect when you're only offering $150 for a prize. You're asking designers to INVEST THEIR TIME, speculating on income and the "prize" is rediculously low...it's really no prize at all.
You might be able to hire a noob designer to do the job for $150 but to ask the design community to jump into a contest with such a small prize is pretty presumptuous.
Save half the "prize" and go shop for a template. You can get a decent one for less that $75...oh yeah...wiat I forgot...you want a CUSTOM design...for $150.Comment

Yes...I see...but "better designers," being a relative term, is about as good as you'll find...designer "A," who entered this contest, is just a bit "better" than designer "B." But, reality is, they both aren't too hot at all.
A decent payout might bring out the better designers but a shitty paying one will not and thus you will only have the chance to find a "better designer" and nowhere near the best designers. And, bluntly, many designers will never enter contests because we work to get paid and not to speculate.Comment
