I'd say I've heard nothing but good things about Deej at Lumpy Designs for cost effective design. Not dealt with him directly but he's always been regarded highly by people here.

I won't even offer our services since it seems we're way out of your league on the price field. However, I've to say that what you pay to us comes back as results.

Maybe you should go for something serious and realistic. This will allow you to pay serious and realistic prices.

I've never saw a 'design blowout price' that works. And I seriously doubt I'll ever see it. There's a reason why successful companies choose pros to make their designs: they like to make money and be successful.

Sorry guys, no need to be so defensive, I was trying to defend you and your business, which happens to be our business as well.

I know most, if not all that posted here charge way more than $350. If you're willing to shoot yourself in the foot, that's your choice. As a matter of fact we might be able to outsource some work to you for that price.

there's a huge difference between a webmaster doing a layout for his/her own site and a designer making a design fro someone else. Of course, chances are that webmaster won't be able to replicate the success with another person's site. And even then, it's a hit and miss thing, otherwise...... why are adult and mainstream mega-companies using designers? Because they're stupid?

any full site designs? looks like just a bunch of logos...

thank you for the example, Bjorn, it's a perfect example of what I meant. I checked a good bunch of the logos, and all sites featuring those logos are gone. Those that are live aren't using the logos, because they were made for contests on GFY.

This doesn't mean the logo caused the sites to die, some of those logos are pretty neat, and a logo won't make a big difference.

But the business approach of those site owners was to spend as little as possible on everything. Logically, they're dead. Because the business model was wrong from the start. Note that I've used the word spend instead of invest.

In opposition to that, we've made several million dollars to our clients, only in 2009. And of course, our clients are getting bigger and bigger. I'm telling this on our behalf, but most quality designers can show that kind of results. That's because our clients invest instead of spending money.

Any quality work will take at least 7-15 days depending on the project. Including research, planning, mockups, the works. Therefore, nobody can charge $350 for quality work, it's a given.

Keep in mind when I say quality I don't mean just fancy, many people can do fancy looking designs in a couple days. I mean designs that make money. For everything else.... blowout prices. You can take blowout prices on galleries, banners, maybe a logo, but blowout prices for the identity of your site is a suicide. You provided the proof.

And you can't ask for more than that, designers have bills to pay, they have to eat, they need money. So, for $350, you'll get something to get rid of the task as fast as possible or the designer disappearing once he realizes it's too much work for the money.

And for the designers that are whoring: be smart. Some of you make quality stuff, charge for it. You may miss 1 or 2 tasks here and there, but this business needs designers, and any successful company won't blink at paying realistic prices. If you don't whore yourself, you'll gain respect, business and you'll get paid accordingly to what you do.

this is the best advice any designer can take, for years i def did lower end projects to build up my contacts.

but i have found now that my prices have gone way up i am making much more. people now respect my work and me as a businessman.

people who are serious in this business have no problem spending the cash to build their business. these are the types of people you want in the long run.

your $350 guy will not be around in a year then what do you do?

never think just because their is alot of designers out there that you have to have mega low prices to compete.

the couple higher paid projects that you take and spend the extra days on will ultimately make your portfolio look better and in turn will attract bigger business' with bigger budgets who are willing to pay to have the design done proper.

it is always better to lose $350 now to make $1000 later. and of course i charge more than that, i am just providing a relative example to this thread.
