remember these two things ( and why didnt they catch on or last?)

TGP2

The saying "Never give them enough to get off on.

While I am certainly not as old skool as many I have been around full time for quite a few years and here is my take on these two

TGP2 failed miserably because TGPs were already a successful business model that gave plenty away, made plenty of money and there certainly wasnt any kind of unity to change the direction the industry was headed.

The saying died a slow death because its simple. If everyone is giving less, then you give a little more then you make more.

I wish TGP2 had been successful and I wish that the saying were as true today as it was back in 97

I agree with Sarah...that and 2257 regs have pushed alot of that free content back into sponsors control with hosted galleries rather than just giving content away.

TGP2 was a good try with the right mindset, however it's impossible to get everyone to change outlook for it to be 'sucessful' .. only by providing legal restrictions/regs or by promoting an alternative touted as 'more effective' rather than just as or less will get webmasters to change their mindset and marketing habits.

I remember it and tried to submit galleries to it, but I found the people that ran those types of sites had such a wide range of what they wanted to see I would have to build a handful of different galleries just to make all of them happy and the small amount of traffic they had didn't make it worth the effort.

i remember like a page that was set up that gave the 'standard rules' for creating the TGP2 galleries. it was still a bit tough to make the pages because their rules were pretty tight, but if it had been adopted, it would have been great

heres the problem that I contributed to..... I made TGP2 gallery pages at the same time I made the TGP ones, I continued to submit to both... eh, go figure huh?

In addition, I know at least a year or so ago, there was still decent sized TGP2 group running around. Not sure if they're still "active".

It was actually thought of LONG before they came up with the TGP2 name by Dragon King back when there were just link lists. I made a shitload of $$$$ when he had a link site that accepted submissions where not every picture went to a bigger picture

when I am transitioning to a new marketing endeavor, I don't drop the other completely, I do both until the new one starts to pay off

all the time the TGP2 gods were pushing their great new system, they never stopped submitting traditional galleries to regular TGPs and sneaking their TGP2s recips on the galleries...the TGP2 gods had feet of clay...

right, smart business for me, I was still making good money from TGP submits... but it contributed to the overall problem that if a surfer hit a TGP2 site first on their quest for free porn, as soon as they hit their first TGP they were all over that bookmarking and playing whack-a-mole heh heh

I remember when I was reviewing for JJJ a debate on whether to take TGP2 galleries or not..I actually can't remember if we took them but I am pretty sure a rule was put in about having to have at least a certain number of clickable thumbs

I remember it, and it was the best concept for longevity. You 'tease' them into submission.

However this industry will always be it's own worst enemy. Flooding the net with endless freebies to the point some think they do not need to pay for porn. I've heard this plenty of times. Although it doesn't apply so much if you are in micro niches.

But this industry has, and will continue to slit it's own throat.

I also add that in this case, the industry had just been given alot of leway thus causing alot of brainstorming. I reckon given the current circumstances, those involved may have been able to produce a more viable product.

TGP2 was a wonderful idea, except it was too late already. It is the same argument often made about making free sites / galleries only softcore and then upselling the surfers to hardcore.

It is a great theory, but the guy next to you is running hardcore in his galleries, and getting more traffic. Sort of like mutually assured destruction, the endless war of "who can give more" keeps growing (see the recent video galleries that give upwards to 5 minutes of free video).

Had TGP2 come before TGP, it would likely be the dominant format. Evolution says otherwise.

sarah_webinc mentioned that blogs are the TGP2 of today, and i see blogs as having a lot better chances of huge success because they are not in direct competition with a similar product that offers more to the surfers like the differences between TGP and TGP2

and it also seems like SE's love blogs thanks to the mainstream breaking that genre of marketing first, there is no stigma attached and good SE traffic to them.

I personally can't wait to see what the next one will be, I am a little hesitant to go full throttle on mobile. I did some experiments with video on it and there is just way to many standards with them. If they can get it down to 2 or 3 sizes that will fit the majority of cell phones i think it could be very exploitable.

Shit, we had to use alcohol to come down from the other stuff. Champagne breakfast was served about 7am if I remember correctly.
