In American English a vacation from work or your job is not referred to as being on "holiday" like it is in British or European English, so there is no confusion here. I am not really religious but I enjoy Christmas since it means spending time with my family. Many people say The Holidays nowadays because it applies in a generic way to Christmas, Hanakkuh, the New Year and the end of year shopping season for a modern multi-ethnic society.
