Ben, like any industry where the market becomes more heavily saturated and competition more steep, there is always money to be made you just need to be smarter, work harder and make smart connections..... as long as there is a demand for porn there will always be $ , you just need to be smart and devise the best way to get your share of it

Crack, good parents wouldn't describe their work on the net as 'smut peddling', children need to only know that daddy works on the internet in advertising, and he has such a great job he is always home to spend quality time with the family - and in addition to that, i'm sure one day when we do tell our children the details of what we do (when they are old enough to understan) , they'll thank us for the college education fund and financial security..

I make a living from it. It's nothing excessive, but it pays me more than any job I've ever had. More importantly, though, is the fact that I'm my own boss....if I feel like taking the day off (or a weeken, or a week for that matter) I do. LOL, I don't often take even a minute off, though, I've turned into a total workaholic.

Of course people are making money in this business. Even fairly new people. What does NOT work any more is me-tooism. Copying other people's ideas (especially old ones) is a pipeline to failure. The world doesn't need another Kara's Adult Playground or Hustler.com. If you want to do a teen site, find some niche within teen. Unfortunately, niches often require highly specialized exclusive content. This implies that it takes more money to get a site started than it used to.

I don't know if it has struck you that "the business" is more than just adult websites. It's hosting services, graphic designers, models, content providers, and so on.

Very informative post. I am a newbie so I know jack but who is making most of the money then? Is the industry as a whole shrinking? Meaning that with so many sites people are finding free porn and are not paying for memberships? Or is the industry still growing and it is the large like sites like Cyberotica that are making all the money? Is the era of the small webmaster is over and the only way to make decent money is to start an AVS or other large site? I read the Wired article and it doesn't sound very promising.

join4freescript.com is a domain and as you know everybody can get whichever domain they want. My script lets people to join into members area for free so I don't see anything wrong on buying that domain... I don't need a trademark to sell my own program....

I'd say that if Join4Free (WEG) wanted to get all $3 of your assets, they could sue you in US court or London or wherever you and your $3 live... ;)

Like you say.. anyone can register any domain... it doesn't give them rights to infringe on others trademarks. Additionally, anyone can file any lawsuit against anyone they want. How big is your legal team?

You're entitled to sell your software, but you might try to do so without trampling all over other's trademarks.. They've spent 100's and 100's of thousands of dollars if not millions building their reputation.

we know each other fairly well i would say.
i wanted to say your post is the best ive seen concerning this business. thanks. with your permission i would like to copy that to my board as ive had a similar question asked there.

i make over 20k a year but no it aint easy. but i do no free sites, no link trades and tgp once or twice a week.
imho this is where newbie boards are failing. the same old shit aint gonna get you anywhere. in trouble if and when laws change.
i see no reason for newbies to do freesites at all. hell avs sites have more webmaster friendly rules and make more money.
tgp aint the problem with too much free porn. its greedy self serving boards and sponsors that push freesite building on newbies.
you aint gotta do that.
ask yourself am i making 8 to 10 dollars per dollar of hosting?
oh and the peeps with the kick ass rides? some of em have some kick ass payments. don't forget that.

Sarcasticbastard, I have to respectfully disagree.
I'm a newbie (well, I started my first adult site in August of last year)
I have only free sites, disregarding the 4 AVS sites I have as they produce very little towards my total income. (I'm not saying that AVS sucks, I see the potential there and am working on increasing their productivity, just haven't given them much attention up to now)
I average over $30 per $ of hosting.

Only one thing I disagree on. You can make money on free sites. Remember how I used to teach on building them? Free sites, submit to valid SE's, mirror them to an avs, submit, take the galleries, submit to tgp's, mirror the sites, submit to link lists, and on and on. It works for everyone. Voltar put a name to it, Matrix I believe. =o)

I just called it working smart. =o)
