If you own property get an umbrella policy on top of your regular insurance. Tenants and people try to sue landlords for any dumb shit they can come up with. Things you would laugh at but obviously its never a joke. An umbrella policy is actually a really good thing even if you don't have a lot of property but you want some extra protection.
Sorry to hear about that SD but hopefully the law will be on your side.
