Then after 3 days of him missing he shows up and tells everyone the reason he wasn't here is that he won the lottery and was keeping a low profile until he got the ticket cashed in. He offered to take everyone out to lunch and we wished him well (and sure most of us were a little jealous of him). A few weeks go by and my boss comes in and says that he had been found dead in his house.
It turns out he had won the lottery, to a degree. He was one number off on his ticket. So he won $1000, not 10 million dollars. His suicide letter said that in his sleep after winning the $1000 he convinced himself that he had actually won the big jackpot and was living in a dream world of sorts for a few days. When he finally came back to reality and realized he wasn't a millionaire he was so bummed he took his own life.
Sad I know. Strange the games the mind can play on you.
