    Should I get a nvidia 8800 GTX?

Reason I ask is my video card (Asus 7900 GTX) is worth about the same what I paid for it (roughly 300). After rebates I can get a 8800 GTX for about $483 total. If I fleabay my card, I'll only have to 'pay' about $180 extra for the 8800 GTX. I'm just wondering should I go ahead and do that so I can be DX10 compatible for a few years to come? I usually don't upgrade any computer hardware for at least two years after I first buy it but in this case I'm thinking about it. Guess I'm a jew at heart... I hate spending money on anything bah.

(also wouldn't help to have a bit more firepower so when Spore comes out I don't start foaming at the mouth and go crazy when my framerate drops).

I hope you have the newest and the best Processor thats out...According to tomshardware.com you would need it

Ive heard people saying that it's worth it if you have a QuadCore Processor that came out on Nov 1st.. And the fastest mobo and memory..

If not it will damper the Video cards pop so to speak.

Not really a hardcore gamer. I've gotten back into gaming recently (after taking a year hiatus after my WoW experience) with stuff like FEAR and Oblivion. Just wanna know if it's a good idea to 'trade-in' this 7900 GTX so early on (it's only a month old)... I usually buy a $1500-2000 dollar computer system, use it for two years, then buy one to two select upgrades, use the computer for two more years, then buy a new one. This would be the first time I've ever upgraded my system before the two year mark.

That's a good point. I have a E6600 so it would probably end up being the bottleneck in my system. I have a good mobo/memory, so it would just end up being the chip that would slow it down.

I've got two 8800GTXs in my new system which is overkill for now but in March we'll have Supreme Commander, Crysis and Quake Wars and I want to play all on high settings

The 8800GTX is an excellent card. Go for it.

i'd sell the old card, since the new one will do Directx 10.

Depends what you want to use it for. If you're doing alot of video editing then I'd wait for the quad-core. But for everything else (gaming, photoshop, etc) it will be fine.

I wouldn't do it unless you play games all the time. The new 8xxx geforce series take up quite a bit more watts and require more amps than older series of cards. So you would have to make sure your PSU can handle it. Most people probably think they are fine with a 500-600 watt PSU but there's more to PSUs than the max amount of watts.

On top of that, most cards in the past that were built for a new version of Directx were never that good/fast for it.

you can overclock it a lot. to something like 3.4Ghz
                                        e6600 overclocks to 3.6Ghz easily.
