I wonder if any small webmasters still make money out there? A lot of friends, especially gallery submitters seem to keep getting out of this business because they can't sell anything. Traffic and sales are down and keep dropping monthly! What about those affiliate programs they must feel the heat too but I didn't see any program go out of business?

I am a one man operation, no employees, and I completely focus on affiliate sales and marketing.
I'm not starving yet. The fruits of labor are harder to reap nowadays but its still like any other business, the devil is in the details.
While it pains me to see so many smaller guys and programs fall to the wayside, the businessman in me is smiling as a clearing of dead weight is needed.

I made my blog to earn an extra supplement income but also for my visitors. It's important to make people feel happy when they spend money (that it was worth it). I think a lot of people underestimate the middle class affiliate... To a program, an affiliate sending you a sale a week is more of an annoyance than anything else, but a small affiliate sending 3-6 sales a day across 20 sponsors, earning $30-40 PPS, using free organic traffic, is making more than a lot of people do at their dayjobs...Comment

I make back my production costs in ONE MONTH of clip store sales. The rest is gravy.
I only concern myself with BUYING, QUALITY, CONVERTING traffic. So it is low volume, high return. I get it through minimal costs, like CS $29.95 a month. I do not buy links, or banners, or pay for anything.
I do not have a ton of affiliates, so I do not have to give away 50% of my profit. Nor do I need to bang in their credit cards, or upsell them to remain in business. I can treat the customer like a king since I am still making a PROFIT easily.
So my monthly recurring EXPENSE is the server(s). The rest is PROFIT. My overhead is very low, and there is a lot of revenue streams to monetize content. Since my 1st RELEASE clip stores pay for the month's content. The rest is all for me.
It can be done, and you can make money in adult. You have to run it like a business, and think like a business. Which most do not. They treat it like a hobby, or beer money, and that is what they make.

Critical Mass was hit maybe a year ago.
The Paradigm/ Zeitgeist/ Meme of our time is that all porn and digital content (music/tv/movies) should all be and is all free.
Do a google search for sex or porn or ass or whatever and you will see the Tubes/Hubs all come up first.
Why would anyone have to buy porn anymore? Its all easy to find, its all free and its 24/7 - always on. Just like our web. No need to download/save. Just stream it when needed.
The rate at which tubes were adopted amongst college kids (all spreading the word about them) was unbelievable.
And this is not even to mention Torrents... Which are just amazing to find entire site rips in one file.
There is still some money to be made. But it will get harder and harder as more people just download everything for free.
The business treated buyers like dumb ass-hole douchebags in the past... when it was super easy to make money. Now those people are jaded and will not buy again.

People will PAY for good content that fulfills what they want. However, most of this industry thinks they know what their fan base wants, and doesn't nor cares to ask. The feed them what they THINK they want and are surprised when they do not buy.
The BROgrams build, on mass, these 30-50 scene pay sites for a program, which they never update, and then wonder why they do not retain? They do not invest in new content, and just build new sites to look like they are the big time, and wonder why customers do not buy. They are getting scenes advertised for sites that do not offer than scene, then feel jaded for $29.95.
I could go on and on with endless examples of this but I defer to my previous remarks. Most treat this like a get rich quick scheme or a hobby. Not a BUSINESS.
That is why they fail.

It's still possible to earn money. Keep in mind that not everyone is happy with the shitty video quality on many tubes and not every potential customer has the time to find the free stuff or install curious p2p tools.

My concepts are doing fine and I am also just gathering content and biding time. I am planning on spending 10k plus next year to shoot content in the South U.S. for BFO. Thats pretty exciting. There are certainly a lot of smaller webmasters getting swallowed up by the bigger webmasters. Just like the smaller programs are getting eaten by the bigger ones. This industry has long needed a consolidation. Too many people, too many willing to not make anything to give things away fro free. Look at what has become of our once gold-mine of an industry.
There are still guys making bank, quietly. But don't think they are doing everything through "morally legit" ways.SharkyComment

If you think the only way to make money is shady, then I'm not sure what you're still doing here. To me that is an excuse or admittance to failure (not saying you are a failure, but that statement is flawed).
As far as the gold mine. Ford realized that his Model T wouldnt be the only car for sale after not to long and he didn't pack up in 1930 and say fuck it, there is to many competitors giving it away for cheaper.
